It's by @axelrodR . Did you have some idea of an implementation for this @axelrodR?

Adding interface options was part of a discussion with Mikko who intended to reshape the API more radically (You can find the thread somewhere in the list of gitHub's cases). We defined the "any angle" option which I was working on and the low quality which I needed later and seemed reasonable that others would need as well. Mikko was supposed to add/change more stuff.
Anyways, to answer your question:
My initial code ignored getEdgeMidPoint() and similar calculations when far away from the origin as well as use a more aggressive A* heuristics function. It was easy and quite good but not enough for the project I was working on. I ended up writing code that build an hierarchical graph above the nvamesh (using the navmesh tiles) and an hierarchical pathfinder. That flag simply governed whether to expand all nodes of the higher hierarchy using the navmesh or just those near the source.
I thought about suggesting to Mikko to add an "extensions" directory where various functionality/code that people keep asking about in the forums can be put. One can add such HPA* without polluting the main code. The non HPA option (downgrading to simple A*) is short enough to go in the main code.
