electric-feed-system-prototype's Issues

EEs tell us if this motor is a terrible idea.

The Problem:

We are a bunch of MEs and thus don't have that much intuition about these types of thing

How to help:

Check out this motor:
https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-aquastar-t20-3t-730kv-1280kv-water-cooled-brushless-motor.html

Contact Jorden at: [email protected] and tell me why you think this motor will work or why it won't

Some context:

We will likely need a brushless DC motor that can deliver 3-4 kW at up to 50000 RPM. Slightly lower requirements can be dealt with. really we just want an idea of weather or not this is a bad choice of motor.

Writing webpage stuff for Gerry

Hey all quick thing but just wanted your input. I made a pared down copy on the readme located in Documentation/ME493 and I would like some suggestions as to what to add for the last two sections. just add some bullets in that's all you have time for I will do the rest.

Project Proposal Doccument

We will need a really solid project project proposal that includes at least the following:

  • Project scope and requirements
    • List of design requirements with descriptions.
  • Project design comparison tool
  • Rough project timeline.
    [may add more later]

Design a more reliable inlet delivery system

The issue

The current delivery system (detailed below) does not adequately provide a consistent pressure and flow rate to the inlet side of the EFS pump. We would like to design a system that:

  • Provides a constant ~45 psi to the inlet side of the pump for the duration of a test (~60 seconds)
  • Can be monitored by a central control system for pressure, flow rate, & fill level

The current design

The current delivery system consists of a 19 gallon water tank capable of being pressurized via a standard shop air pressure fitting located at the top of the tank and with an outlet port at the bottom that can also be used for filling. this tank may still be used for the next iteration of test system as it does have an acceptable volume for the task.

The biggest issue with this tank setup is that typical shop air systems like the one built into the engineering building cannot supply the flow rate required to maintain a constant pressure in the tank for the duration of a test.

Potential solution

We may be able to get away with using a nitrogen bottle with a high flow regulator to maintain the tank pressure. this will be closer to the eventual flight system so it is a good idea that we start working out any kinks now.

Monitoring and control systems will need to be installed in the system including pressure transducers, thermocouples, and servo operated valves that can be actuated from a distance.

Theoretical comparison of Blowdown vs. Elec. pump system

We want a prediction tool that generates pretty pictures and graphs that will be a part of the proposal at the end of the term and will help us show the benefits of an electric pump fed system (based on the UoRDJ papers that John found)

  • Probably in Python

WTF units!

The problem:

Turns out the industry standard for pumps is to use mixed units to run these calculations. but they are terrible to try and figure out what units are actually being used.

The solution:

Basically I need more people beating their heads against this. Check out the pump sizing notebook under the "Alternative approach" section heading and try to figure out what the real conversion coefficients should be to give us real number.

DAQ and test apparatus control system

The issue

The current data acquisition system and test control system while serviceable is lacking in a few key areas that would allow us to reliable test the EFS system and to gather meaningful data from it. We would like the new system to do the following:

  • Allow for remote control of the entire test
  • Handle and store incoming data from a variety of sensors and system health monitors
  • Remove as much human error from tests as possible
  • Adapt easily to future iterations of the EFS pump

Ideally a small EE/ME team could tackle this problem. we need to keep safety in mind moving foreword and as such people running tests need to be much farther away from any test that is occurring.
