It should be possible to make these types invariant in their type parameters by making the given instances polymorphic (and bounded). Then, each Maker/Reader pair can be combined into a single type.

Provide typeclasses for moving between Strings of absolute filenames and file or directory representations. For Jovian the representation of files and directories would be different, but for most other I/O libraries, including the Java standard library, the representation would be the same.

Instead, typeclasses should throw exceptions if they can't produce a result.

We should use the new typeclass definition style,

everywhere, since it should remove a lot of code.

Provide genericX methods for generic typeclass instances so that the instances can be used without referring to them by name.

Use capture checking instead.
