Probably conflict with already installed .vsix. Try uninstalling the extensions from within Visual Studio "Extensions and Updates" windows (Tools/ Extensions and Updates...) and then installing compiled version.
If this doesn't work, navigate command line to the location of VisualRust.msi and run msiexec /i VisualRust.msi /l*v log.txt, paste resultant log.txt file here or send it to me and i'll take a look.

Just as I thought, you've got gallery version already installed and the new .msi installer can't resolve the conflict. Current workaround is what I suggested above (uninstalling existing .vsix installation from Visual Studio manually).
In the mean-time, I'm renaming this issue and I'll update it once I've got fix in the repo.
