It looks like this is an issue with the djpymemcache library, which is here:
https://github.com/jsocol/django-pymemcache
You'll have to open an issue with them to get it fixed. They will need to change the line:
if isinstance(value, basestring):
to something like:
if isinstance(value, six.string_types):
That should make it compatible across Python 2 and 3, to the best of my knowledge (we don't use Python 3, so this is not an area in which I have much expertise).
I just noticed that we have a similar problem with our serde.py
code, so I'll submit a separate fix for that.
