tabkit's Issues

Small tweak to Protect Tab feature, and offer of volunteer help in documentation efforts

First, off, let me THANK YOU for the wonderful firefox add-on. It does
nearly everything I could want, and have longed for, perfectly. You are
beyond generous to make this available to the public, and clearly a user
interface designer that puts many of them at major corporations to shame.

There is one, not really bug, but tweak I would so like to see in your
wonderful product.

(Given how fantastic your product is, I wouldn't be surprised if this
feature is included and I just haven't found it yet. Speaking of which,
the documentation for this add-on is slight, or have I just not located it
yet. I was a software documentation specialist at Apple for over a decade,
and I would gladly donate my time to help create professional-level
documentation for your wonderful product. Contact me at [email protected]
if interested.)

Back to the tweak. So often while surfing, I find a page, hugely expensive
in time to load, that contains many links I like to visit. I open this
slow-loading, expensive page in one tab, and then open various links from
within the page, often one at a time, in new tabs.

Invariably, I forget to middle click, and I lose my expensive page to a
subpage, and then have to reload the expensive page. It sounds like a
small problem, but costs me a significant amount of time.

When I saw that your product had a "protect page" feature, I was sure
salvation was at hand. But of course, your feature works (by design, don't
get me wrong) like this:

== What exact steps will reproduce the problem? ==

1. Protect a tab
2. Click any link
3. Link opens in same tab.

== What is the expected output? What do you see instead? ==

No longer expected, but DESIRED, output is that "protecting" at tab
protects the tab AND its current contents. SO, clicking a link in a
PROTECTED tab always spins off a child tab.

== What versions of Tab Kit and Firefox are you using? On what operating
system? ==

Windows Vista, Tab Kit 0.5.6

== Please provide any additional information below. ==

Please consider this tweak to the Protect Tab feature, or perhaps as a new
feature. If the feature does exist, I'd love to know about it! Also, I am
serious with my offer for help on documentation. I look forward to hearing
from you.

Dynamic tab size

#########################################################
# This issue tracker is only for reporting bugs and #
# little tweaks. If you're suggesting a major, possibly #
# controversial enhancement, it would be best to report #
# it on http://tabkit.uservoice.com/ instead. #
#########################################################

== What tweak or new feature are you proposing?
It would be nice, if the tab size would be calculated from their labels.
Imagine a tab labelled "info" and a tab labelled "this text is not really
long". I would like the first tab being i. e. 70px width. The second would
be something about 200px width.

== What goal would this enhancement help you achieve? ==
It would save some space.

Ctrl-Drag (Duplicate) tab within group messes up group

== What exact steps will reproduce the problem? ==

1. Create a tab group.
2. Hold control while you click-drag one of the tabs in that tab group.
3. Drop said tab within the same group.

== What is the expected output? What do you see instead? ==
I expect that if the group was made of two tabs before then it should now
be made of three tabs, one of which is a duplicate of another.

I see a group of two tabs where the right-most tab of the original group is
no longer in the group but is still to the right of the group.

Tabs openned from search bar replace the current tab even though the option was set properly .

== What exact steps will reproduce the problem? ==

1. In advanced options, check Open Tabs by default with Search Bar
2. Enter data into search bar
3.

== What is the expected output? What do you see instead? ==
Should open results in new tab, but it just replaces content of current tab.

Last tab doesn't close properly with browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab set to false

== What exact steps will reproduce the problem? ==

1. Close all tabs. The last tab to close reads "BLANK" but its content
still shows.
2. Enter any new URL. The status line immediately says "Done", but the new
page does not load at all.
3. If you click on the tab, the previous content disappears, and the tab
starts behaving normally. (Now you can load a new URL).
4. Alternatively, you have to launch a new tab and then load the new URL.
5. If we simply disable the TK addon, the problem disappears. (There is no
need to uninstall the addon).

== What is the expected output? What do you see instead? ==

See above.

== What versions of Tab Kit and Firefox are you using? On what operating
system? ==

TK 0.5.6,
FF 3.5.1,
Windows XP SP-2
(Another PC with DELL's version of Windows XP, SP-2 has the same issue.)

== Please provide any additional information below. ==
In mozilla help forum also, this problem is reported by others.

Practically everything is default in TK, except that I am using ALL-IN-ONE
sidebar, which is positioned at lest; and the tabs are positioned at top.
(This is the third option in TK when it starts for the first time.)

Changing the other settings did not change this behavior.

Please contact me if more data is required.

Thanks.

Tabkit sidebar - problem with not stay minimised when told to.

== What exact steps will reproduce the problem? ==

1. select minimise on the sidebar - in left or right hand sidebar setup
2. move mouse over sidebar
or
3. open new tab

== What is the expected output? What do you see instead? ==
Expected: Sidebar to stay closed until i click on it to re-expand

Instead:Move mouse over sidebar - very easily done accidentally if sidebar
is on right, beside vertical scroll bar, or on left beside horizontal.

Instead:open new tab sidebar pops open and stays open.

== What versions of Tab Kit and Firefox are you using? On what operating
system? ==
Ubuntu 9.10 ff 3.5.3 tkit 0.5.8

== Please provide any additional information below. ==
Most people will keep the sidebar open, I do on my other machines. but on a
netbook, screen size is at a premium. the sidebar pops open and closed like
a yoyo.
Either make it only expand on a sidebar click/keyboard shortcut, or make a
menu option for behaviour. For example i would expect it to open
momentarily, or have focus switched to if i were to press ctrl-1 (select
1st tab in tab-bar)- which does not work, will report as a bug.

http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Keyboard+shortcuts?style_mode=inproduct&s=sh
ortcuts
Ctrl 1-9 are tab selection hotkeys. 1-8 gives tab 1-8, 9 gives last tab opened.

Tab bar scrolls unevenly or not at all over collapsed tab groups

== What exact steps will reproduce the problem? ==
1. Open lots of tabs, enough to make the tab bar scroll, then ten more
2. Group ten of them together
3. Collapse those ten
4. Use the mouse wheel to scroll the tab bar back and forth from one side
to another

== What is the expected output? What do you see instead? ==
I expect the tab bar to scroll evenly and smoothly from one side to
another, as the scrolling buttons at the ends do.
Instead, the tab bar slows down or even gets stuck.

== What versions of Tab Kit and Firefox are you using? On what operating
system? ==
TabKit 0.5.8 on Firefox 3.5.3, Windows Vista Business 32-bit SP2

== Please provide any additional information below. ==
If tab bar is scrolled nearly all the way to one side and the grouped tabs
are on the other end, wheel-scrolling only goes one direction: toward the
end of the bar, and it is not possible to scroll back to reveal the grouped
tabs.

I tried to click on the x for the tab to close it and it stayed there. I

Current solution tends to be close firefox and starting it back up.

Dropping a tab from a 2 tab group onto itself causes weird behaviour

== What exact steps will reproduce the problem? ==

1. Form a tab group containing exactly 2 tabs
2. Drag one of them onto the near half of the other tab, such that the drop
arrow appears in between the two tabs.

== What is the expected output? What do you see instead? ==

Nothing should happen (as the tab is being dragged to where it is already).
Instead the tab that wasn't dragged will be ungrouped, yet the dragged tab
will remain grouped (all on its own!).

This has been mentioned before, but I could not find it in search. Yes,
I've tried this in a clean profile, and it still works the same. This is
with multiple rows across the top, I don't know if the problem exists in
the sidebar style. When using the back/forward FF button, things work as
expected in the original window, but any secondary window produces this odd
behavior. This works the same with a fresh session, as well as loading a
session (SessionManager) with multiple windows. Only the original window
behaves as it should.

New tab button position

#########################################################
# This issue tracker is only for reporting bugs and #
# little tweaks. If you're suggesting a major, possibly #
# controversial enhancement, it would be best to report #
# it on http://tabkit.uservoice.com/ instead. #
#########################################################

== What tweak or new feature are you proposing?
(please be precise; pictures may help) ==

The ability to change the position of the new tab button.

== What goal would this enhancement help you achieve? ==

Reduce the need to take focus from current tab.
This functionality is available with the "new tab button position" add-on
but this interferes with the multi-row tab bar option.

Allow for group by hostname or perhaps by request URI regex

# This issue tracker is only for reporting bugs and #

# controversial enhancement, it would be best to report #
# it on http://tabkit.uservoice.com/ instead. #
#########################################################

== What tweak or new feature are you proposing?
(please be precise; pictures may help) ==

Group by hostname in the URL, not just by domain name.

== What goal would this enhancement help you achieve? ==

When using tabkit in an office, it's common that each application will have
it's own name in DNS, and all of them will be under the same domain name.

E.g. request-sys.foo.com, www.foo.com, and sharepoint.location.foo.com will
all currently get grouped by tabkit into the same group, however each of
them is very likely to represent a different workflow to the users in the
company.

If automatically doing this causes too much grief, would it be possible to
have a configuration option where sites that should always be grouped
together could be specified? E.g. perhaps for a worker at foo.com,
www.foo.com and my-departments-intranet.foo.com aren't used, so tabs
relating to them shouldn't be grouped separately. However if we imagine
that request-sys.foo.com is a heavily used site for our worker, the user
could specify that tabs from the site request-sys.foo.com should be in a
group, and that anything else in .foo.com should be lumped into a separate
group. Ideally any number of site names could be specified with a regular
expression or a glob.

Thanks,

-Peter

One-row tab bar scrols to the far right when opening new tab in a group and the tab bar is 'full'

Middle Click on Bookmarks Overwrites Current Tab Instead of Opening a New Tab

1. Navigate to a website with TabKit enabled.
2. Middle click on any bookmark or Live Bookmark and observe the current
tab being overwritten.

== What is the expected output? What do you see instead? ==
The standard Firefox behavior is to open bookmarks, live or otherwise, in a
new tab when clicked on with the middle mouse button. With TabKit enabled
middle clicking any bookmark is the same as a standard left click.

== What versions of Tab Kit and Firefox are you using? On what operating

standard in Firefox sans Tab Kit.

I expect the tab to open at the far right of the tab bar. Instead it opens
just to the right of the tab I am currently viewing, or the group
containing that tab if it is in a group.

== What versions of Tab Kit and Firefox are you using? On what operating
system? ==
Firefox 3.5.2, Tab Kit 0.5.8. This used to work right under 3.5.1 and
0.5.6; I am not sure which upgrade caused the regression.

Prefers ANY Clicked Linked to Open in New Tab by Default

#########################################################
# This issue tracker is only for reporting bugs and #
# little tweaks. If you're suggesting a major, possibly #
# controversial enhancement, it would be best to report #
# it on http://tabkit.uservoice.com/ instead. #
#########################################################

== What tweak or new feature are you proposing?
(please be precise; pictures may help) ==
This user would like to add an option to "Tab Kit Options" >> "Controls" >>
"Open Selected Links" to enable any clicked link to ALWAYS open in a new tab.

== What goal would this enhancement help you achieve? ==
>> This user prefers visual tab "trail" detailing path to descendant tab
rather than using either the "Back" feature or "History" feature to return
to (a) previous page. Instead of the "right-click" option showing "Open in
New Tab", it should be the opposite: "Open in Current Tab" (i.e default
action opens links in new tab).

3.Sub menu will not close. To eliminate sub menu, must close and reopen
Firefox.

== What is the expected output? What do you see instead? ==

== What versions of Tab Kit and Firefox are you using? On what operating
system? ==

Sorting doesn't work when tabs are grouped

== What exact steps will reproduce the problem? ==

I had a dozen tabs from my work wiki. Two of the tabs were essentially the
same page (one had "/updated?" at the end) with the same title. Going to
"Sort Tabs by Page Title" would not work until I completely ungrouped the tabs.

There should be some kind of default sorting within groups, or make the
sort work within groups.

== What is the expected output? What do you see instead? ==

I expected two tabs with the same Page Title to sort next to each other,
but they remained apart from one another.

== What versions of Tab Kit and Firefox are you using? On what operating
system? ==

== Please provide any additional information below. ==

I appreciate this add-on, though I wish it worked with Tab Mix Plus (I
understand why it doesn't, though.)

Duplicate Tab

#########################################################
# This issue tracker is only for reporting bugs and #
# little tweaks. If you're suggesting a major, possibly #
# controversial enhancement, it would be best to report #
# it on http://tabkit.uservoice.com/ instead. #
#########################################################

== What tweak or new feature are you proposing?
Your duplicate tab that is on the right click of a tab and under Tab
Kit-->Duplicate Tab in the context menu, Turn it into a button for the
toolbar. I extensively used this feature with the Addon Duplicate Tab but
they never released an update when 3.5 came out. Fill in the gap by
offering the button and not just a 2 deep context menu item.

== What goal would this enhancement help you achieve? ==
I have not upgraded my main machine to firefox 3.5 because of the duplicate
tab addon being uncompatable, I use it that much and a 2 deep context menu
item is not easy enough.

'open all tabs' for a folder submenu of the bookmark menu 'overwrites' the current tab itself

== What exact steps will reproduce the problem? ==

1. open bookmark menu, open a folder submenu
2. select left-click 'open all in tabs'
3. (all applicable options to 'open in new tabs' in preferences are SET)

== What is the expected output? What do you see instead? ==

expected output: open all bookmarks in NEW tabs to the right of
the current bookmark (preferably with an option to open not next
to the current tab, but at the FAR RIGHT).

observed output:
opens bookmark #2..n to the right _next_ the the current tab.
(not my preference), however IT ALSO OPENS THE FIRST
BOOKMARK IN THE CURRENT TAB.

normal left click open work as it should. The issue is probably a variant
of issues 22 and 26...

WRT the opening 'near right' vs 'far right' I'm reasonably certain I've set
everything to 'far right'/'ungroup' as well. But that's minor (or possibly
a missing option or unexplained about:Config item in contrast
to the major issue of 'overwriting' of the current tab.

otherwise, the addon's a real life saver :)

1.Start Firefox.
2.When loading is done, try to shrink/expand the width of the sidebar by
dragging the border between the Tabkit sidebar and the normal browser window.
3. The sidebar border will shrink by one pixel or expand by one pixel,
