What does gitattributes do and is that something special for github?

You add a .gittattributes file to the root, with content like:

tests/      export-ignore
.gitattributes  export-ignore
.gitignore  export-ignore
.travis.yml export-ignore
README.md   export-ignore

Then, when a visitor downloads the repo (for example, to use board rules on their forum) the files listed above are excluded from the download.

It's just a way to prevent certain repo-only files from being distributed along with the extension when downloaded.

I do not see why the tests folder, and the invisible files, or even the README need to be distributed with the extension.

nv and marc do this on their Board3 Portal repo.
