Generate conventional commit messages from the command line.

I liked using conventional commits extension on VS Code and wanted to have a similar experience on the terminal.

This CLI is inspired by the Conventional Commits specification.

Make sure you have node.js installed on your system. You can download it from here.

Run the following command to install the CLI globally.

npm i c-commit-cli -g

You can now run commit from any directory.

Make sure to stage your changes before running the command.
The goal of the CLI is to help you generate conventional commit messages and not manage your git workflow.

Run commit to initiate the commit process.

The first prompt is about the type of commit you are making. Following are the options you can pick from.

• feat: A new feature
• fix: A bug fix
• docs: Documentation only changes
• style: Changes that do not affect the meaning of the code (white-space, formatting, missing semicolons, etc.)
• refactor: A code change that neither fixes a bug nor adds a feature
• perf: A code change that improves performance
• test: Adding missing tests or correcting existing tests
• build: Changes that affect the build system or external dependencies (example scopes: gulp, broccoli, npm)
• ci: Changes to our CI configuration files and scripts
• chore: Other changes that don't modify src or test files
• revert: Reverts a previous commit

• wip: Work in progress
• release: Release a new version
• deps: Update dependencies
• security: Fix security issues
• breaking: Introduce breaking changes

The second prompt is about selecting a Gitmoji. Gitmoji is an emoji guide for your commit messages. You can find more about it here.

If you don't want "Type" or "Gitmoji", you can skip them.

You will be prompted to enter a commit message and an optional detailed description of the changes you made.

If you want to add a detailed description, you will be taken to your default editor to write the description. The changes made and saved in the editor will reflect in the terminal once you close the editor.

On the final stage you will get a preview of the commit message. You can either confirm the message or go back to make changes.
