open-science-org.github.io's Issues

Add a section that lists the problems of current scientific ecosystem

Add a section that lists the problems of current ecosystem. You can pull it from the whitepaper. This is what I came up. Please feel free to edit.

Imbalance in demand and supply of funding

-hyper-competitive atmosphere affecting science negatively in several ways
-scientists are spending more time writing the grants instead of conducting the scientific research
-promotes short-term gain vs long-term gain in science
-suppresses the creativity, original thinking, and risk taking and promotes safe research
-promotes quantity over quality
-encourages the scientists to take the short-cuts and exaggerate their results due to the pressure of publishing.

Closed and slow review process

-rationale behind the decision to accept or reject a publication is not disclosed to the public
-reviewers and editors will have subjective biases (e.g. favoring positive replications promoting survivor bias)
-“All journals are bought — or at least cleverly used — by the pharmaceutical industry” - Richard Smith, former editor of the British Medical Journal
-median review time, the time between submission and acceptance of a publication, is approximately 100 days— a very long time
-no way to promote the replicability of the studies under the current system

Closed and expensive dissemination

-the cost of publishing can range from $2000 to $10000 per publication
-researchers and universities pay a heavy amount to subscribe to journals. For example, Harvard University paid more than $16 million as subscription fees in 2012 alone
-On the other hand, the peer-review— the most critical process behind the value creation of the current scientific publishing industry—is done for free by the scientific community.

Consolidate the information about IPIS, IPKS, pub-hub

Following two projects will be consolidated into a single project in future

  1. Interplanetary Idea System (IPIS); https://github.com/open-science-org/IPIS
  2. Decentralized Publication Storage; https://github.com/open-science-org/pub-hub

The new appropriate name might be Interplanetary Knowledge System (IPKS). For now, let's stick with IPIS

At this point, listing both github repos under the IPIS section and mentioning that they will be consolidated into a single project should be enough

Add fundamental objectives of OSO

OSO as a DAO for scientific ecosystem envisions to meet the following two fundamental objectives:

  1. To create an efficient flow of value within the community to optimize the direction and magnitude of the scientific progress to align with the overall organic growth of the human race and its environment. Here, the term ‘value’ means anything that is useful for a successful scientific endeavor. Value can be in the form of funding, data, information, computational resources, etc.
  2. To create a sense of fulfillment among the members of the scientific community.
