When I first tried to write this little app I was goofing around with python, thus somewhat strange choices when it comes to data configuration.

Index matching is not the best way to do it, and it requires additional ranks list.
This all can be stored in katas JSON:

katas = {
    9kyu : {
        kata : ['taikyoku shodan', 'taikyoku nidan', 'taikyoku sandan']
    }
}

Index can still be used for getting katas for a previous rank.
