obshapedbutton's Introduction

OBShapedButton

OBShapedButton is a UIButton subclass optimized for non-rectangular button shapes. Instances of OBShapedButton respond to touches only in areas where the image that is assigned to the button for UIControlStateNormal is non-transparent.

How to Install

Installation via CocoaPods

If possible, you should install OBShapedButton via CocoaPods:

$ edit Podfile
platform :ios
pod 'OBShapedButton'

Manual Installation

If you cannot use CocoaPods for whatever reason, manually add OBShapedButton.h, OBShapedButton.m, UIImage+ColorAtPixel.h, and UIImage+ColorAtPixel.m to your Xcode project.

Usage

  • Design your UI in Interface Builder with UIButtons as usual. Set the Button type to Custom and provide transparent PNG images for the different control states as needed.
  • In the Identity Inspector in Interface Builder, set the Class of the button to OBShapedButton. That's it! Your button will now only respond to touches where the PNG image for the normal control state is non-transparent.

Corrected some serious bugs in April 2011. Thanks to the commenters on my blog and those who posted issues on GitHub for pointing them out, including the fixes.

Contributors:

  • balabhadra added support for background images.
  • yurkins fixed an issue that only occurred in release builds.
  • Steven Zweier fixed an issue that would intermittently result in wrong hit tests.
  • jvanakker fixed an issue with images that had a different size than the button.

obshapedbutton's Issues

Alpha detection flipped

On iOS, UI vs CG drawing has a flipped Y order. The colorAtPixel is currently looking at the image flipped vertically.
Changing a line to:

// Draw the pixel we are interested in onto the bitmap context
CGContextTranslateCTM(context, -pointX, -((CGFloat)height-pointY));

Fixes it. (verified with a button shaped like Texas)

Issue with Storyboards and Release Build

There is a very strange issue with a combination of using Storyboards and selecting the "Release" build on the Run .App scheme.

The OBShapedButtons are not working with this configuration.

This issue cannot be reproduced on the simulator, only on a device (I use an iPhone 4S with iOS 5.1).

The problem seems to be choosing on the "Apple LLVM compiler 4.2 - Code Generation", "Optimization Level" for "Release" the "Fastest, Smallest [-Os]" option.

Any ideas why is this happening on "Release" builds with storyboards?

It appears that the calculation for point inside is not correct when the button image dimensions do not match the button size dimensions

It appears that the code does not account for image sizes that do not match the button size (probably only applies to development builds as production images should match the button size).

I added the following logic inside of "pointInside" to account for image sizes that do not match the button size (I did not test for Retina Display @2x images). You may be able to design something more elegant.

CGSize iSize = buttonImage.size;
CGSize bSize = self.frame.size;
point.x *= (bSize.width != 0) ? (iSize.width / bSize.width) : 1;
point.y *= (bSize.height != 0) ? (iSize.height / bSize.height) : 1;

swift

Hi,

what about a swift version?

thanks

Doesn't account for contentMode

The hit testing / alpha check is wrong for when you change your button's image content mode. It behaves as if the image was still in default content mode, as a result the touch check doesn't match anymore with the button on the screen.

[[myButton imageView] setContentMode: UIViewContentModeScaleAspectFit];

Any ideas?

some file are missing.

hi, with xcode4 some files in your projetc are "red"

  • ComplexShapesDemoViewController.xib
  • ComplexShapesDemoViewController.h
  • ComplexShapesDemoViewController.m

can you update your project?
i'm using different approach for recognize alpha level, and i want try your project.

thanks
