This seems to have been solved thanks to Sam on Stack Overflow pointing out this passage from the RubyGems Make Your Own Gem guide:
Code for your package is placed within the lib directory. The convention is to have one Ruby file with the same name as your gem, since that gets loaded when require 'hola' is run. That one file is in charge of setting up your gem’s code and API.
Putting require 'marvel_api'
in a Ruby project was throwing a LoadError because there was no such file in the gem. Changing lib/marvel.rb
to lib/marvel_api.rb
solves this.
