This is going to be one of the hardest things to change later. I think it should be switched to the IPFS base64 protobuf since that's reportedly not going to change in breaking ways.

the current paradigm only works for onymous groups

solution:
Add a .metadata folder in the group folder.
Add a file membership-status.json.enc which maps public keys of the people in the group to either [the name of the file with their group key] if they're in the group, or "removed" if they were at some point in the group but no longer.

Also solves the problem of being able to find messages of someone no longer in any of the group info member lists.

probably the best way is if cat or ls fails, then check if there's a file bearing the same name but with .link or .lenc appended, and recurse on whatever's in that.

Makes sense to also add support for cating http... links

Make sure it doesn't leak who's talking to whom.

• will need to be encrypted in transit (not sure if this is default)

• addresses being dialed probably also need to be hidden...
  • probably works to create custom address (is that possible?) and then share it with friends (so it's not just your ID)
