site's Introduction

No Hello

Hello!

https://nohello.net/

Translators

We've added language support to the site, but are still working out the best workflow for people to submit translations. (There's a small amount of manual work required on the code side!)

If you'd like to submit a translation, you can find us on Transifex. I think you can suggest translations directly on their site without needing an invite to the organisation, but I'm not sure exactly. Let us know! Let's figure it out.

Either way, open an issue on our GitHub repo, and we'll work out the best way to proceed :)

Programmers

This project is a Eleventy site. If you've used a static site generator before, you're pretty much good to go. If not, take a look through the Eleventy documentation to get up to speed.

Getting Started

It's a JavaScript site, so you'll need node installed. Using nvm will make sure you're using the right version.

# git clone, etc
yarn # install dependencies
yarn serve # run development server

Then open localhost:8123 in your browser, and you should be ready to disco.

Making Changes

Unit tests are via Mocha. Nothing too fancy there.

We use UI tests via Playwright. To ensure consistency, the snapshots are taken with a Linux container. To run this locally for convenience, you'll need two things installed: Docker and act.

Available commands:

yarn check-snapshots # do your snapshots match?
yarn update-snapshots # if not, update your snapshots!

Translations

Changed base strings? yarn strings:push. Updated translations? yarn strings:pull.

[pt-br] minor grammar mistake

Hi there.

I've found a minor grammar mistake on the translation to Portuguese (Brazil).

The string That said, if you see this sites URL as someone's status/bio"...

...was translated to Dito isso, se você ver a URL desse site na bio/status de alguém.

However, the correct form of the verb "ver" (see) would be "vir" in that sentence.

That's because Portuguese uses the subjunctive mood to indicate something is uncertain to happen or to have occurred.

The conjugation for the verb "ver" (see) in this hypothesis is tricky and can sound wrong even for native speakers because "vir" corresponds to another verb, which means "to come".

But, in the future subjunctive, the stem of the verb "ver" always becomes "vir", and the stem of the verb "vir" becomes "vier"

Therefore, the correct string translation would be Dito isso, se você vir a URL desse site na bio/status de alguém, se prepare para ser ignorado(a) se você só mandar um "Olá"!

Great, useful and fun website by the way ✨

Sites moves on mobile because of changing header text

The site noticeably moves on Safari mobile (at least) because of the header that changes (I.e. from "no hello" to "no greetings") and the affect that has on the number of lines. This causes discomfort while reading the content.

I'd suggest absolutely positioning it and the subtitle in a new container to the top of the page. That way the height no longer affects the rest of the content.

Thanks,
bsnk-dev

"?" should be avoided too

image

Asking any question should specify the information that the questioner is missing and expecting from the questionee. Simply typing "?" is disrespectful at the very least, but serves no communicational purpose, isn't even funny. It should be avoided just as saying "hello" in business communication.

I'd like whoever to expand this site with a section regarding "?" or create a sister site devoted to that issue. I am open to participate in server/domain costs etc.

Japanse Translation Finished

Hello,
Now every string is translated into Japanese. Can someone review and upload it please?
We would like to distribute this wonderful page to our Japanese community as well :)

Issue

Hi I have an issue could you help with it?

How do you do the retyping of the hello in different languages?

Forgive me as this is not an issue, more of a question.

The cursor and retyping of hello then backspaced, then retyped in a different language, then backspaced etc... is awesome, how is it done? Can you point me to the code?

I'm a software developer but I don't design websites so I'm sorry if this is a basic question.

Incorrect date in paragraph

For some reason, the date in the following text is reflected as 2022, when the new year has rolled around!

But it's 2022 and chat is neither of those things.

Fixed translation errors

Hi @notjosh ,
I reviewed the live translation from yesterday and I noticed some errors, sorry for making them, I really didn't notice them when I was translating it.
I have updated the translation on Transifex, if you're not busy, could you please update the site too?
Don't worry, I reviewed the full translation and everything should be good now. 😄
Thanks!

Polish translation has incorrect name

The polish translation uses "Katarzyna" as a name for a male character when that is a women's name. It also refers to them as a she. Please change the name to a male name like "Kuba" or something.

"nohello.com" is now back

Most translations have a link to the Wayback Machine for nohello.com, but the site is now back, as a Blogger site.

It would be nice to update the translations to reflect that fact. (The ES translation already links to the proper site, I noticed when I presented the translation.)

Add Italian

Hi,

first of all thanks for this lovely website. I just added the Italian translation on Transifex, but I'm not sure what more I need to do now for it to be ready for you.

Let me know.

Finnish Translation

Hi, I'm interested in making a Finnish translation of the website. I tried to request the language to be added to the translatable languages but the website said it was already requested (thus I was also unable to join the team).

Add a mention about people saying 'I need help' or similar

I've had some people on Matrix channels say "Help" or "Need help" or something like that. I've been linking them to this site because even though they're saying 'help' instead of 'hello', I feel like it creates a similar problem.

Typo On The Dialog/Chat

There's a typo in the first dialog that says "taht" instead of "that" (not sure if it was on purpose but I often do make that typo myself so yeah thought of letting you know)

Is this repo still maintained?

No commit since 29 Mar 2022
Many issues, PRs and suggestions in Transiflex.
Would be happy to help (with the languages that I know) if you're willing to delegate.

Add over and out

This is a phrase which, I learnt from hollywood movies talking on walkie talkie.
Same can be used to convey, it's time to close the conversation thread.
Please use this Phrase "over and out" on website content.

Add Czech

Please add the Czech language to Transifex, it's requested but not there yet.
I would love to translate it, as there are many people who really need this site linked to them...

[Feature Request] Support i18n

This website is the best "nohello" I've ever seen, but it doesn't support i18n. Do you have any plans to support i18n and a11y? I am willing to contribute the Chinese version for this great website.

Typo of source strings

Found some typo of source strings, but I've no permission to fix it.

Line 10: sophie -> Sophie
Line 16: taht -> that

Problem with the [year][/year] tags in translation

When using the [year][/year] tags in the string 409955021, they look like this in English:

  • (dynamic / aff) But it's 2022 and chat is neither of those things.
  • (static / neg) But it's not 1990 and chat is neither of those things.

The problem is that the affirmative and negative forms in pt-BR are quite different and can't fit in this format:

  • (aff) Mas estamos em 2022 e conversar por texto não funciona dessa forma.
  • (neg) Mas não estamos mais em 1990 e conversar por texto não funciona dessa forma.

Stuff like this happens all the time in localisation (plural and nouns can be trick in German, for example).

If the maintainers are willing to fix this in the code, I would suggest to have this entire phrase as a single string and have a note for its context (as it belongs in the middle of a paragraph).

If they are not, I think it's better to go for only using the static/negative form and ignoring the [year] tag in pt-BR. This is the original suggestion submitted by Andréa and I'm inclined to agree. I changed it anyway to use the [year] tag with "2022" as the placeholder as we discuss this and as I don't know if the code would break because it expects the tag to exist (Transifex warns that it is missing).

Talossan to Transiflex

I would like to push my translation of the page into Talossan. Please add the language to Transiflex. Many thanks :)

Estonian to Transiflex

I'd love to provide an Estonian translation, but it seems like I can't add new languages on Transiflex myself. Would be great if Estonian could be added!

Privacy policy missing

no hello uses Google Tag Manager from what I can see, so I'm pretty sure a privacy policy is necessary (?)

Either way, really cool project, thanks for making it 👏

should the site link back to this repo?

I wanted suggest a change, but had to google for contact info (like a caveman ;) ).
Was really happy to see it being a repo, so sent the PR, but I'm still wondering if the choice to not link here is intentional.

Slovenian Translation

Heyo! Slovenian has already been requested on Transifex, but it hasn't yet been added to the repo. If you can add it, I'll translate it :)
Thanks!

The analogy with the telephone doesn't quite work

On the telephone, you do it initiate the conversation with exactly this hello-protocole. There's even a word invented for it, Allo.
The analogy might instead be to leave a voice message with just Allo.
