cincinnati's Issues

LearnYouNode Issue: Navigating between exercises

Instead of calling LearnYouNode all the time to get to various exercises, could we add functionality like executing "learnyounode next/prev/X" where X is some exercises number for fast navigation?

wtb logo

Cincinnati NodeSchool needs a logo! Let's come up with something here. ๐Ÿ˜„

Colored logo, png version

We should add the logo to the README, which means we need a png to make it easier. Additionally, @franvarney mentioned trying to add some color variations.

Introduction slide deck

I think it would be nice if we made a shared slide deck that can be used during the introduction section at future events. Maybe using something like remark?

General Promotion Questions

Was about to tweet about the meetup and realized we should agree on a hashtag.

September NodeSchool Session

Let's organize a session for September at the Modulus Office (because that seems the easiest/fastest).

I suggest Saturday 9/19 1p for a lunch session or Thursday 9/17 6p for an evening session.

I vote for either makemehapi or test-anything.

Nodeschool workshopper request - ACM@UC

Hi everyone,

I've previously spoken with Jack and Tara about doing a nodeschool event/workshopper at an ACM@UC meeting. We had a simple one in mind, say learnyounode. For the most part, the audience would be people with little experience with Javascript.

The exec board was hoping for sometime in late September - we have a meeting on Sept. 22nd at 6pm if that works, but we're definitely flexible.

Thanks!
Kurt Lewis

Node.Cincy (07/08/2015)

We'll be doing a NodeSchool session for Node.Cincy on July 8th. Let me know if
you can't make the 8th. :)

This is what I have so far for the blurb on the Meetup page. Let me know what
you think and definitely let me know if I missed something.

The Cincinnati NodeSchool chapter will be running a workshop for this month's
Node.Cincy! The workshop includes running through guided examples with the
organizers of Cincinnati NodeSchool present to help with any questions or
issues.

This is open to everybody who wants to learn Node.js - no prior Node.js
experience is required. The workshopper is a Node.js terminal application so
bring your laptop with Node.js installed. If you aren't able to get Node.js
installed, come early and one of the mentors can help get you up and running.
Don't have a laptop? Pair up with somebody and make a new friend while
you learn. :)

The Cincinnati NodeSchool repository will be available for any questions you
might have before or after the workshop. Open an issue with your question and
we'll do our best to help.

There is a code of conduct for this and all Cincinnati NodeSchool events, which
is available in the Cincinnati NodeSchool repository

Tutorial request for AngelHack Cincinnati

Hey guys,

I had a short conversation with Tara this morning about how presenting the Node School tutorial given at The Brandery last night (or another if you'd a different one more relevant) to our audience at AngelHack Cincinnati 2015 on Saturday, July 18.

We are flexible on timing on Saturday and would really like to have Modulus at the event. I can answer any questions here.

makemehapi Workshop (10/21/2015)

Come join us for the makemehapi workshop at the Modulus offices (1739 Elm St, across from Findlay Market) at 6pm on Wednesday 10/21.

We'll have drinks & snacks as well ๐Ÿป

Node.Cincy (07/08/2015) follow-up

Turnout and participation were fantastic! There were a lot of new faces that I
hope to see here and, overall, I am incredibly happy with how things went.

These are my thoughts to get us going and, if anybody has anything else to add,
please comment and I'll keep this issue up to date with everything as our guide
to the next event.

Things that we should keep doing

I'd love to hear more about this from the attendees but, from what I could see,
people were progressing nicely in the exercises and getting help when they
needed it.

  • Energy levels and excitement were good
  • Pace seems to be about what it should be
  • Mentors were amazing
  • Attendee to mentor ratio was great (5:1)
  • "Woo"s helped keep the energy up

Things that we should start doing

I feel really good about how things went, but we can definitely improve.

  • Prepare an actual presentation for the intro

Things that we can do differently

I need to follow my script (or maybe not be the one to present). I had a nice
script for the things I was planning to go over then totally forgot to go over
those things.

  • Get the laptop hooked up to the TV way before starting
  • Structure the time to work on exercises better ("work on this one for 15
    minutes with help from mentors")
  • Make sure that the venue can handle as many people as what RSVP'd - we got
    lucky this time

Again, this was a wildly successful first session ad I'm incredibly excited to
do more of these events. Don't be shy about commenting on this issue with
anything that would make us better. :)

AngelHack (07/18/2015) follow-up

Another successful session! This session was definitely a lot smoother due to
being a lot more prepared.

Now for some stats:

  • 23 attendees
  • 3 mentors
  • New record of exercise 4

The venue brought a lot of people that were ready to get hacking and they
embraced the exercises.

Things that we should keep doing

We did a much better job of setting up the projector and being ready to go.

Things that we should start doing

Tara brought up creating a "getting started" section in the main reademe and
direct people to that section. This should have links to all resources (i.e.
the link to the installer and the modules). Getting people into the repository
while they are at the session will be far more effective than just telling
people to visit the repo.

Things that we can do differently

Get people to the repository and gitter! We're not adding members to the
repository because we aren't getting them there. :(

AngelHack (07/18/2015)

Presentation starts at 11h30 at UpTech. We'll be running the learnyounode
workshop and we'll have an hour to get through as much as possible.

The AngelHack event is pretty big, but not everybody will be interested in
joining. I would expect no more than about 25 or so to show for the workshop.

Mentors, let me know who is available so I can get you on this list. :) Anybody
else that would like to be a mentor, comment here and I'll get you added.

I'll keep this comment update with answers to any other questions that come up.
