no-google's Introduction

No G

Definition of GAFAM

The GAFAM is an acronym used to describe the five multinational technology companies Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple and Microsoft, taking the first letters of all these companies. The GAFAM are sometimes referred to as the Big Five due to them being the five most profilific companies in the world. Although in some sectors some of the five companies may be in direct competition, they offer different products or services overall while presenting some common characteristics that deserve to bring them together under the same acronym: by their size, they are particularly influential on the American and European Internet both economically and politically and socially and are regularly the subject of criticism or prosecution on tax matters, abuses of dominant positions and the non-respect of Internet users' privacy.

(Combining those with the main whole filter is useless and not recommended, however, feel free to combine the different smaller filters)

⚠️ Important regex filters not included in blocklist

.*[`^.`]l.google.com$

For example tygbrbooefk4.cache.l.google.com

.*[`^.`]googlevideo.com$

For example r14---sn-vgqs7ned.googlevideo.com

Youtube Advertisements Regex

^r[0123456789]+((-{3})|(.))sn-.{8}.googlevideo.com$

NOTE: Youtube advertisements are pretty difficult to block trough DNS, as they mainly use a couple of domains for delivering advertisements, but they may also use those same domains for delivering other types of contents that you might not want to block.

Regex filters

(..|^)((think)?with)?google($|((adservices|apis|mail|static|syndication|tagmanager|tagservices|usercontent|zip|-analytics)($|..+))) (..|^)g(gpht|mail|static|v(t[12])?)($|..+) (..|^)chrom(e(experiments)?|ium)($|..+) (..|^)ampproject($|..+) (..|^)doubleclick($|..+) (..|^)firebaseio($|..+) (..|^)googlevideo($|..+) (..|^)waze($|..+) (.*.|^)y(outube|timg)($|..+)

You can also easily use the modified pihole regex installer script by @mmoti by executing this terminal command from your raspberry Pi Pi-hole server.

curl -sSl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/nickspaargaren/no-google/master/install.py | sudo python3

and then, executing it. It should add all of the above regex automatically.

FAQ

Can I use it with NextDNS?

Yep ! It is available in their selection of domains list, labeled as ¨No Google¨. NextDNS is using the wildcard-domains format, so you will have to manually whitelist some specific services, as it will block everything Google related.

Can I use it with my other ads/domains blocker program ?

Surely! If it does indeed support the host or domains type of filters. Import it manually, or click on this link if you are using a web browser extension.

Can I use it with anything other than Pi-hole?

Sure thing, the No Google list is declined into multiples formats types, as an host format, domains/urls format and a wildcard format.

Hum, do you got any mirrors of the list ?

Yes indeed, We have a GitLab host mirror of the repo available at this address : https://framagit.org/PoorPocketsMcNewHold/no-google Note that the main filter is being worked here, so, updates and modifications on the Gitlab source will have to be updated manually. Otherwise, if you do prefer to use Gitlab, feel free to use it, and even contribute to our list there instead!

The converter program

Data conversion

The program convert.py will read pihole-google.txt as input file and convert its content into different output formats. It can be invoked like

python3 convert.py pihole

In order to produce all different output formats, run

python3 convert.py all

JSON output

It also can output the data in JSON format:

python3 convert.py json

With this output, and the jq program, the data can be filtered and manipulated easily. In the following section, you can find corresponding examples.

# Produce list of all category names
python3 convert.py json | jq -r 'keys | .[]'

# Produce list of domains for the `Doubleclick` category only
python3 convert.py json | jq -r '.Doubleclick | .[]'

# Produce list of domains for the `Analytics` and `Doubleclick` categories
python3 convert.py json | jq -r '(.Analytics,.Doubleclick) | .[]'

Can I block the other letters of GAFAM ?

Of course, here’s some filterlists that should help you accomplish that.

Unbound no longer launches with the list enabled

Hi,

Unbound no longer launches with the list enabled. The automated lists do not contain domains on the last two lines, which creates an error in Unbound and it refuses to restart.

This is due to the category jibemobile*.

Please remove these two lines.

Add this filter, to the Filterlists.com repo

I’ve already done that to the past with the current filterlists I’ve made, and being surely the biggest and best place to find Filterlist, it might be pretty useful to suggest the different lists there.
They’ve even got a filter for different ad-blocking software, so we can stipulate those filterlists to be parsed for Pi-hole.
As I’m not the current owner of this repo obviously, I think they would prefer that you do it yourself.

NOt blocking well

trying this filter on firefox91esr ublock1.39.2 on DW.COM website and ublock showing google.com on green WTF?!

olso not blocking ajax.googleapis.com

I thought this filter would be trustworthy but NOT!

Bunch of impressions and suggestions from the Hacker News Publication.

If you ask yourself this huge lot of stars on the repo, We got quite a bit of attention on Hacker News.

This is a nice idea, but the one thing I haven't been able to divorce myself from is YouTube. I really hate how Google has allowed such a wealth of constant information that completely dwarfs alternative video hosting sites. As censorious as Google can be(now "up next" is always some video from CNN or Fox), blocking YouTube from my network would mean cutting myself off from a large portion of the world.

I will test once again if adding all the list, except the YouTube one let you access and use it. For myself, I’ve had no issues since when using it with invidio.us. Maybe that person didn’t noticed that we have separate lists.

The problem is that JS Fonts and other CDNed stuff won't load and websites will hang or work weird - particularly Stackoverflow. Bc it's all over https you can't MITM it and inject your own with OpenWRT/piholes. Decentraleyes (a Firefox browser extension) fixes some of this, but not all. If anyone has any additional suggestions, please let me know (it makes life bearable in China without a VPN)

If we can extract some specific domains from those, this can be useful indeed. I mainly block all the JS fonts, and mostly other CDN´s, But I do agree that sometimes, You can't even have a slight usage of the website. So, possibly for another list.

Does the author mention avoiding using Google as a third party DNS service.[?] In the beginning, PiHole, i.e., preconfigured dnsmasq, was pointed at some third party DNS service, maybe Google. Not sure what the default configuration is today. If it was Google, then is there any irony in that a project designed to blocks ads is by default having its users send their IP and ISP location to an advertising company probably hundreds if not thousands of times over in a single day of web use.

Nice idea, even if we do block their DNS servers itselves, it might be great to suggest people to directly think of using an alternate one, or a way to bypass it if they are on some android phones for example.

I find Google Container to be an excellent plugin to segregate my Google account from the rest of my browsing. It's not an official plugin from Mozilla, but it is forked from the Facebook container plugin.

Maybe create some sorts of ¨Other things that we recommend to use with pihole-google¨ on the read-me page.

GAFAM
Never seen it listed out like that, I thought it was FAANG. Or is FAANG only used in reference to top salaries in the Bay Area?
GAFA(M) omits Netflix but not Amazon, since it stands for Google Amazon Facebook Apple (Microsoft)

Well, That's due to me being french obviously. Should I remove or ¨rename¨ all of that? Also, I could also add some new little ones, but they still have a much smaller importance compared to the principal ones, so I don’t think Netflix could be useful.

Nice idea, but you're better off accomplishing it with TLD wildcards or AXFR transfers than a hosts list, since new sub-domains are always being created and rotated.

Suggestion for creating some wildcards lists.

Hosted by Microsoft, suggests blocking Microsoft, too.

If you care about that detail, we can move that project elsewhere, or host a backup/copy on a local gitea instance. I think I can do that on my raspberry pi without much issues.
I’ve created a mirror of the project on my Gitlab account, to the FramaGit Gitlab instance (Hosted by FramaSoft, a French FOSS association) and added its link to the README.md.
As this from my account, If you wish to still have a control over this mirror as well, Feel free to create a mirror on another service, but until then, I’ll maintain this mirror. Note that the gitea self-hosted instance is still being considered.

Add a codensed version with adblock+ syntax

Why asking for this ?

For AdGuard home, where you can do easily add "||metric.gstatic.com^ who will block metric.gstatic.com, but also subdomain.metric.gstatic.com like for instance all xxxxx-dnsotls-ds.metric.gstatic.com with one rules (more efficiant than a hosts/domain based list who have to be regularly updated)

Maybe change the name to be... less generic ?

Nothing really wrong in itself by naming it ¨pihole-google¨, but while I was suggesting to add this to filter list repo's (See #13) i’ve noticed that by the name alone, this could be tought as being one sort of pi-hole default filter, or one that CAN ONLY be used on Pi-hole (Otherwise, uBlock Origin explode or somethin´)
Also, comes the fact that Pi-hole is a trademark in itself. https://pi-hole.net/trademark-rules-and-brand-guidelines
In the way we use it, I think it isn’t an issue, but this could be a great idea to actually rename it, as it's starting to became more and more popular with other people, including non-pihole users.
In one repo, I’ve suggested using the name ¨No G¨ (But, by precising that it could be nice if they accept to endorse using our ¨actual¨ name for the moment, aka pihole-google).
But I let you see if you are actually agreeing on it @nickspaargaren and if the community would accept the same too.

PoorPocketsMcNewHold's contributions to block google

Hi @PoorPocketsMcNewHold ,

Maybe you already noticed; I'm the initial creator of https://github.com/nickspaargaren/pihole-google!

I'd like to thank you for your contributions to our repository. I am very happy with your effort and would like to send you some investment money in crypto valuta. You can choose, I'll try to convert some.

$50. Anything you like; bitcoin, ethereum, litecoin, whatever, you name it. BAT perhaps? https://brave.com/nic944 :)

Just send me the correct address and which valuta you'd like. Again, thank you.

Nick Spaargaren

(No this isn't a scam, not aware how crypto works? Just download brd.com and find out, I have send you an email so you can reply your address there)

Wanting to contribute

Hello;

I noticed you did not have a section for AWS blocking and asked for contributions in that area. I have a list of IPs which are associated with AWS tracking, but no direct URLS. Please let me know if this would be helpful.

Some Regex Rules Would Block Non-Google Sites

Hi there,

I was reading through your regex filters and two rules jumped out that will block popular non-Google sites.

((.).)?abc.(.)
This would block popular TV channel in the US that Disney owns: abc.com. I know Google owns tens of domains with abc in the domain name, but I wanted to point out abc.com as unintended consequence.

((.).)?android.(.)
This would block popular domains that have the word android in them, for example: www.androidauthority.com that I can easily think of.

Hopefully you find this helpful if these aren't known previously.

Thanks

Pihole-google-adguard alternative blocklist

Create a new blocking list based on pihole-google-adguard.txt but adding $important after each ^ (for example: ||google.com^$important) to increase the priority of the blocking and avoid the white rules of other blacklists.

Update of categories folder

The files in this folder haven't been updated since months. It's nice to have new domains (like #50) added to pihole-google.txt. But when and how are the files in the categories folder updated? This is important if someone doesn't want to block all of Google.

STUN servers Google

Hello, shouldn't Google's STUN servers be blocked? On my side, I found these:
stun.l.google.com
stun1.l.google.com
stun2.l.google.com
stun3.l.google.com
stun4.l.google.com

Thank you for your work.

Unparseable entry

Hello there. First of all thanks for the block list.

I just wanted to let you know that one entry namely m.doubleclick..net can't be parsed by unbound because of the additional dot.

Thanks in advance

Your Google list doesn't block these

This list is epic thank you for all you work making it i have found that your list doesn't block theses domains from google :-)

digitalassetlinks.googleapis.com
app-measurement.com
alt1-mtalk.google.com
alt2-mtalk.google.com
alt3-mtalk.google.com
alt4-mtalk.google.com
alt5-mtalk.google.com
alt6-mtalk.google.com
alt7-mtalk.google.com
alt8-mtalk.google.com

thank you

Can't access facebook and google at all

So I've just updated my blacklist,
and now I can't access any google's products (including my Gmail).

Same with facebook,
the domain isn't accessible any more.

Duplicates in some lists

Hello, I found three duplicates in this lists:

  • beacons.gcp.gvt2.com
  • gcp.gvt2.com
  • redirector.gvt1.com

You can check this with the command sort -g YOUR_LIST|uniq -D

Otherwise, it's a great list. Thanks for the work done.

Regards.

AIO Host File To Block GAFAM?

Hey Is Looks Like You Make Separate Host TXT File For Each Company From GAFAM

I Want to get aio version pls? Where in 1 host file included All 5 company (GAFAM)

edit:
also add 0.0.0.0 before domain pls :)

Here are some experimental regexes we can use

# **Experimental** regexes
^(.+[-_.])??google[-_.]
^(.+[-_.])??gstatic[-_.]
^(.+[-_.])??googleapis[-_.]
^(.+[-_.])??withgoogle[-_.]
^(.+[-_.])??googletagmanager[-_.]
^(.+[-_.])??googletagservices[-_.]
^(.+[-_.])??googleusercontent[-_.]
^(.+[-_.])??googlesyndication[-_.]
^(.+[-_.])??chromeexperiments[-_.]
^(.+[-_.])??google-analytics[-_.]
^(.+[-_.])??youtube[-_.]
^(.+[-_.])??waze[-_.]
^(.+[-_.])??doubleclick[-_.]
^(.+[-_.])??firebaseio[-_.]

These **should** block all domains like this: *.<domain>.*.
They certainly need to be improved, for example idk if they work with domains like this: .*.<domain>.*
However, this might be a start.
Sorry if they don't work: actually, I can't test is as I had to remove pihole from my rpi. I'll install it on a zero W the next week.
EDIT: the format was wrong, now you should see it correctly :)

Domains update (Android 11)

I found the following domains on Android 11 which are currently not included in any of the no-google lists:

General:
optimizationguide-pa.googleapis.com
pai.googlezip.net

Android:
crashlyticsreports-pa.googleapis.com
voilatile-pa.googleapis.com

[Feature Request] Whitelist to make Google Services work

Hello,

I'm using your "No Google" Blocklist with Pi-Hole and really like what it does. As expected, I had to whitelist many services to get my Android smartphones working with the usual Google apps (Play Store, Maps, etc.).

It would be great if you could add an additional whitelist which enables Google Services but only with the minimal amount of needed domains to work. A few examples:

  • Google Fonts: fonts.google.com, fonts.googleapis.com, fonts.gstatic.com
  • Youtube: www.youtube.com, i.ytimg.com, s.ytimg.com, etc.
  • Google Play Store on Android: play.google.com, play.googleapis.com

Your whitelist would be optional to users who want to use Google services with less tracking.

Would be great to know what you think. Thanks a lot for this project so far!

Please use Sublist3r. (Great job anyway!)

It's an utility which shows as output all the subdomains that are related to a name. (trough various engines).
Example:
Input: google.com
Output:
...
google-proxy-66-249-93-92.google.com (this is not in pihole-google, yet
google-public-dns-a.google.com (this is not in pihole-google, yet)
goto.google.com (this is not in pihole-google, yet)
group.google.com (this is not in pihole-google, yet)
groups.google.com
...
[-] Total Unique Subdomains Found: 851

...and these are only a few examples! There is a lot of work to do and I'd love to contribute as much as I can. You can significantly improve the blocklist efficiency.
I'll do it for myself (but if I understand how Github works I have no problem to share my work here).
I appreciate very much the work with pihole-google blocklist you have done so far!
