nick-tallguy.github.io's Issues

HOT-tips - intro page notes

http://nick-tallguy.github.io/en/hot-tips/

Also appears on the yellow 'square' of the home page - should it be there if it also appears on the Quick Access list? Even if not on Quick Access question if it should be .

Do the modules of iD, Humanitarian, Tasking Manager & Tracing guides need to be updated with links?

Please add any comments you wish to concerning this module.

Notes

Has draft sections within it at the moment.
Does it need a section index - probably not, especially if it will appear in the Quick links menu. However the section index does give the opportunity to expand & explain what is contained 'behind' the title.

Not ready yet.

Kiswahili ongoing translation

This issue refers from the main LearnOSM issues list

@kateregga1 I am proposing major changes to the layout of the site, and these are currently being tried out on our new staging site here.

Rather than have to move things around after you have translated them, could you please click on this link to the staging site on github, and then fork the site, and do your translations on the fork of the staging site. This also makes it easier for you to see how your translations will look, before we transfer them across to the main site.

I've already moved the files within the Kiswahili section of the staging site, so there shouldn't be any other changes for you, unless you request them because you are ready for more translations.

I am carrying out quite major changes to the sections & headings, so it will probably be at least a week, possibly 2 or 3 weeks before we are ready to transfer everything across, but I can always make an exception and transfer your translations earlier if needed.

Sorry for creating extra work for you, but I'm hoping it will make the site easier to navigate in the future.

Keep up the good work.

Regards

Nick

Translation workflow with prose.io

@Nick-Tallguy
For translators using prose.io it might be easier to provide all files at once.
If we provide files as they proceed, it creates apparently diverging forks and eventually their repo goes out of sync when we merge their finished parts.

Or we need admin rights on their github repos so that we keep them in sync and it should reflect on prose.io repos.

cc @yohanboniface (thanks for the diagnosis and input!)

Most languages - Field papers needs updating

Document in mobile-mapping section of all languages except German & English is actually about (Portuguese section talks of walking papers with a different permalink) - needs updating.causes broken links & 404 errors.

Should we remove this altogether - walking papers is now so far out of date that this guide may not be useful.

Options

  • add a comment at head of file that this section of LearnOSM is out of date and needs updating
  • delete the file
  • do nothing - not really an option

rename nepal-disaster to disaster mapping

Yellow button currently labelled "HOT Disaster mapping" links to a single file called _posts/en/coordination/0500-10-27-nepal.md which has been updated so that it is not so event specific. I would like that file renamed 0500-10-27-disaster_mapping.md,
and it's permalink changed to /en/coordination/disaster-mapping
At the same time (or we will get 1000's of 404 errors) I need all of the files
_posts/bi/0100-01-01-index.md
_posts/de/0100-01-01-index.md
_posts/en/0100-01-01-index.md
etc. - one for each language on the site
updated so that this line interspanlink: /en/coordination/nepal-disaster changes to interspanlink: /en/coordination/disaster-mapping

Development of LearnOSM - ongoing work

Hi & thanks for your interest,

You are reading this issue on a 'staging site' - this is a site I have set up so that development for LearnOSM can be developed and tested before being implemented on the actual site at https://github.com/hotosm/learnosm

This is the staging site - open it in a different tab on your browser & compare it with the main site from the link below.

It's very probable that something you see here will actually arrive in LearnOSM, but this is still a staging site, so if we try something out, & then decide it was a bad idea, we can either alter it or just roll back a few commits and no changes will have taken place on the main site.

There is nothing to stop us trying out several different things at the same time, or shortly after each other, so if there is something you want to try out, fork this site, make the changes & submit a pull request - if this makes no sense to you, please open an issue on this or the main site explaining exactly what is needed & I'll see what I can do.

Collaborators

I've added a few collaborators to this staging site - if you think you should have collaborator access, please contact me. It may make sense to have the same 'owners & collaborators' as the main LearnOSM repository, but I can't see who has those accesses. Please just ask, I'm not trying to exclude anyone.

Liquid syntax error slowing site build

I've been experiencing problems building the site locally (used by me to make sure things are okay before uploading, but also as the method to generate the sitemap.xml).

Commit rXRiQs3C4J is my attempt to fix this. I think everything is okay and working fine.

@michael63-osm please can you check out my changes and when/if you are satisfied we will make the same changes on the main site.

wiki cleanup

The "English Learning Guides" in the wiki are the resource users are referred to when they click on the blue button on the front page. Much of this material has already been included in learnOSM, we need to remove that from the wiki and decide what to do with the remainder. All documents referenced are Google documents.

The following table summarizes the current state based on a comparison I made today. For our convenience I've numbered the lines so that we can reference entries.

No entry in the learnOSM column means that there is no (rather: I did not find a) corresponding learnOSM document. A checkmark in the remarks column means that learnOSM contains at least as much information as the wiki (and is not a draft document but appears on the website).

GPS section to mobile mapping - German update needed

Hi @michael63-osm
I've set this repository up as a 'staging site' for sorting out problems or ideas before passing them onto the full LearnOSM site.
You can view this staging site at http://nick-tallguy.github.io/en/

At present I'm working on moving the garmin section across to mobile mapping. I've updated the text in the english versions. I had to make changes to 'more about josm' which used to precede gps, as well as the mobile-mapping folder contents.

Please could you fork this site, then review the changes, update the text as needed, and then make a pull request. I'll merge it & you can then see everything looks okay.

I'll be making contact with the translators for the other languages to see if I can get all the sections updated on this staging site before passing it on to the main site.

Thanks in anticipation

Nick

'Interim' Guides

Although we are in the process of adding more translations for the site, this takes time. Also, it is possible that a visitor would understand the guide they require in another language, but needs to be aware that the guide exists in that language. In some cases, the guide is available as a document, currently linked from the LearnOSM wiki.
As a temporary feature, we need 'interim' documents created - two examples are shown here;
http://nick-tallguy.github.io/en/intermediate/editing-the-wiki/
&
http://nick-tallguy.github.io/de/intermediate/editing-the-wiki/

The current situation for the site, with a list of missing guides can be seen on this document - view only

Any translated phrases that are needed for updating the LearnOSM website should be added to the file 0100-01-01-index.md which is located within the _posts/two letter language code/ folder, for instance the German 0100-01-01-index.md file will be found in
https://github.com/Nick-Tallguy/Nick-Tallguy.github.io/blob/master/_posts/de/0100-01-01-status.md

Norwegian Translation

@andersar Thank you for your work so far in translating LearnOSM.

I've recently setup a 'staging site' which allows us to try things out before passing them on to the main site. You can view this staging site here http://nick-tallguy.github.io/nb/

One of the things we are working on is re-arranging the site to make it easier for newcomers to find what they need. At the moment the staging site shows some of the proposed changes, and I am putting more in place so that when we pass it on to the normal site at http://learnosm.org/nb/. You can easily see that the staging site contains many of the translations you have prepared, while the main site does not (yet). As the staging site is not normally visible to anyone who does not know of its existence, it is an ideal place to try things out, and make sure they are perfect before passing them on to the main site. We are in the process of moving many files out of the beginner section, into other sections - nothing is lost, but it will appear in a different section. We are also moving the main guide to editing with iD into the beginner section.

It will be a lot easier for us if you are working on the staging site to carry out your translations. I've placed into the _posts/nb/beginner/ a file for translating - 0200-12-23-id-editor.md and I've pasted into it a hidden section that contains the translating you have already done on the now deleted start id file.

---- to be continued.

zh Simplified Chinese

hotosm/learnosm#426 refers

Hi @qyu I have added you as a collaborator to our staging site - you're getting this message from it. We are starting to use this site as a stage or testing site, before transferring the information to the main site when we are happy with it.

I've started to set up the site with the files for Simplified Chinese - you can view it here http://nick-tallguy.github.io/en/

I've placed into the folder _posts/zh the files to make the translation appear, and the files for what we are planning to be the beginners section (there are still meetings and decisions to be made, so the makeup of the beginners section may alter, but it is likely to include at least these files) I can add more files later when you are ready.

We also need the following text translated - if you provide the translation i will make sure it appears in the right place:
How do you want it to appear in the title bar eg..
'sw' Kiswahili
'uk' Українська
'zh' Simplified Chinese

Thanks in anticipation & Good luck.

# Humanitarian link problems - image & title

  /my/coordination/humanitarian/

and other languages - some have link as

  /my/coordination/humanitarian

if the title does not have the trailing slash, the language picker reads it as a different module and the links do not work.

also title is

  #Humanitarian Mapping

instead of

  # Humanitarian Mapping

same is probably true of main site - needs investigating and fixing at the same time
