Hi all,

Sorry I've figured this out quickly. To my understanding nginx typically handles URL encoding and decoding. The %1C represents the ASCII "File Separator" character, which is a control character and not commonly used in URLs. I think nginx is trying to normalize this.

Added to map file:

map $request_uri $new_request_uri {
    ~^(.*)%1C(.*)$ $1%251C$2;
    default $request_uri;
}

server {
    location / {
        set $target_url http://backend-upstream$new_request_uri;
        proxy_pass $target_url;
    }
}

Now it seems like the pipe conversion is gone. It's also worth noting that proxy_pass was the solution here:

location / {
    set $target_url http://backend-upstream$request_uri;
    proxy_pass $target_url;
}

Cheers,
Michael Mendy
