vacant_storefronts's Issues

Future Work

Saving our future work, let me know if I missed anything, or feel free to add.

  1. Geo data issues:

    • How much can we trust the latitude/longitude, bbl info being provided? How much error may there be?
    • Do we geocode all the addresses? Instead of only those missing bbl or lat/long?
  2. Swap out the 2010 census tract.shp to the 2020 census tract to do an apples-to-apples comparison for years 2019, 2020, 2021, etc.

  3. Set up code to make it easier for yearly updates, perhaps working with James to write-out functions

  4. Combine the other storefront vacant datasets to see what new analysis or findings we can say about storefront vacancies (square feet, monthly rent)

  5. Read and consider the article Nick shared https://emoszkowski.github.io/ericamoszkowski.com/Moszkowski_JMP.pdf

  6. Is it possible to see if there was a business activity listed for a storefront in the previous year before becoming vacant in the following years? Would it be possible to use some other source like DCA's legally operating business dataset to pull business activity?

Code Request 2

Code review request for

Some things:

  • I did some weird things to be able to merge on the geoids in Storefronts_ct_map.Rmd & Storefronts_clusterinng_map.Rmd , don't worry if it's confusing - Brook double-checked last week!
  • Because of ongoing councildown updates I had issues using colorBin/some leaflet features, which is why I'm using leaflet::colorBin instead of councildown::colorBin, etc.

Code Review Request

Code review request for Storefronts_ct_map.Rmd and Storefronts_cd_map.Rmd.

Some things:

  • Storefronts_cd_map.Rmd needs to be run first.
  • The census tract info was initially formatted differently between the census and the vacancy data set. The updated formatting/merged shapefile definitely needs to be checked to make sure the tracts line up correctly. I left some notes on the .Rmd about a few potential issues.

Let me know if anything is confusing!
