Webfrontend and rendering script for generating isometric 3D maps of OSM data using osm2pov and povray

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Introduction
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

some basic explanation...

TBC

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Install and configure on Mac OS X (10.7)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WARNING: Unfortunately this guide uses a mixture of different packaging systems (MacPorts and homebrew). It is recommended to only to use homebrew, but I haven't tested it without using MacPorts yet.

1. Checkout the source of osm-isometric-3d (if you didn't already):

$ git clone [email protected]:bitsteller/osm-isometric-3d.git
$ cd osm-isometric-3d

2. Install macports (if you haven't already) and do the following:

$ port install py27-lxml
$ port select python python27
$ port install py27-pil

3. Install python modules:

$ easy_install keyring
$ easy_install oil

4. Create a directory "osmosis" and extract the latetest stable version of osmosis (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Osmosis#Latest_Stable_Version) in that directory.

5. Make sure that the the osmosis executable file has the executeable permission set (in osmosis/osmosis-0.x/bin: chmod u+x osmosis). Check if the location of the executable matches the path specified in the make.py script of osm-isometric-3d. The relevant line in make.py should look something like this: COMMAND_OSMOSIS = "osmosis/osmosis-0.39/bin/osmosis"

6. Install gcc 4.5 (see http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Osm2pov_on_the_Mac for more information)

$ sudo port install gcc45
$ sudo mv /usr/bin/g++ /usr/bin/g++.old
$ sudo ln -sf /opt/local/bin/g++-mp-4.4 g++

7. Install renderer (the --use-clang option for povray is important, because otherwise povray will only produce empty images)

$ sudo brew install povray --use-clang

8. Optional: Install twidge for twitter support for finished renderings

$ sudo brew install haskell
$ cabal update
$ cabal install twidge

Add ~/.cabal/bin to your PATH:

$ sudo vim /etc/paths.d/Cabal
and insert the line

~/.cabal/bin

into the file.

If you don't wan't to use twitter, disable the OPTION_ENABLE_TWITTER in the file make.py by changing the line

OPTION_ENABLE_TWITTER = True
into
OPTION_ENABLE_TWITTER = False

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Install and configure on Linux (Ubuntu)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Download and install povray (http://www.povray.org) using the package manager of your distribution or by downloading the soure and compiling yourself.

2. Checkout the source of osm-isometric-3d (if you didn't already):

$ git clone [email protected]:bitsteller/osm-isometric-3d.git
$ cd osm-isometric-3d

3. Create a directory "osmosis" and extract the latetest stable version of osmosis (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Osmosis#Latest_Stable_Version) in that directory.
Make sure that the the osmosis executable file has the executeable permission set. Check if the location of the executable matches the path specified in the make.py script of osm-isometric-3d. The relevant line in make.py should look something like this: COMMAND_OSMOSIS = "osmosis/osmosis-0.39/bin/osmosis"

4. sudo apt-get install python-setuptools, easy_install keyring
