bookmaker's Issues

Create postscript filters

If these scripts can be wrapped into scripts that read postscript from stdin and print postscript to stdout these can be used as filters for cups. Using these filters printer admins can create pseudo printers that automatically create books from normal pdfs.

output file or --print is required and the usage description does not reflect this

When --print was added, the output argument became optional (as the printer is then the output). The usage message states that only the input argument is needed.

Possible solutions:

  • When no output is specified (and --print is False), cat the output pdf to stdout. If this is what is done, then also make input optional with its default being to read from stdin. This would also transform bookmaker into a pipeable unix utility. There could also be an option to have it accept and generate postscript instead of pdf (through the use of pdf2ps and ps2pdf)
  • Detect the situation when output and --print are not specified and produce an appropriate error message.
  • Remove --print from the bookmaker script, perhaps including it as an additional script in the package, this would split the ambiguity between two interfaces and make it clearer to describe.
  • Output to a default filename (input-book.pdf or some such)
