I have attempted to replicate this issue but my units appear to be working as intended. If other people are noticing this, could you please let me know.

When I flash the node and rename with a word with less character the old letter stay.

Hi,
If using Arduino IDE, in "Tools" menu, you need to setup "Erase flash" to "All flash content".
This way, Arduino will erase the entire flash before programming. If you miss this, old data remains in ESP flash
