So this was entirely due to the zip order. Normally, with Word, we always saw the parts arrive in the correct order. In these test files, the critical [Content_Types].xml is the very last entry, not the first. So we need to defer entries until we have read that one. That is possible with yauzl, but not especially easy.
With this in place, there is still an issue with empty text boxes not matching 100% between the OOXML and OLE variants, but apart from that, all is properly equivalent. The textboxes differ in that in the OLE version, we get a couple of extra newlines.
