aws-tilemill's Issues
The connection has timed out authorizing MapBox / Unable to reach local TileMill Server
We used the https://github.com/miccolis/aws-tilemill to install an instance of Tilemill on an AWS server.
Browser: Firefox (version 24.0).
I ran into two connected errors with our new hosted TileMill on an AWS instance:
- I was generating a “The connection has timed out” error when trying to authorize Tilemill to upload to our MapBox account.
I noticed that after hitting “authorize” and logging into my MapBox account, the URL TileMill was using to connect to the servers was
https://tiles.mapbox.com/oauth/authorize?response_type=code&redirect_uri=http%3A%2F%2Fec2-50-19-40-145.compute-1.amazonaws.com%2Foauth%2Fmapbox%2Ftoken&client_id=tilemill&type=web_server - here I noticed that the IP address highlighted above in the URL did not match the local server address. I then manually switched the “50-19-40-145” in the address bar to the AWS server’s correct IP address and hit enter. It worked and I was able to authorize our MapBox account.
Note that we had assigned an elastic IP to the new AWS instance.
2. After authorizing MapBox, I then went into one of the preloaded projects and noticed that nothing was loading. I opened one of the layers and hit save in an attempt to force it. I then received an “Unable to reach local TileMill Server error:
I found the following article in the MapBox support forums: http://support.mapbox.com/discussions/tilemill/7136-unable-to-reach-the-local-tilemill-server
I then followed its solution by navigating to /home/tilemill/.tilemill and finding the config.json file.
In the config.json file I found the wrong hostname (ec2-50-19-40-145.compute-1.amazonaws.com) being called by the settings ‘tileUrl’ and ‘coreUrl’. I then corrected 50-19-40-145 to match our server address and restarted tilemill.
I’ve since tested everything. I can create projects, load layers, and upload to my mapbox account.
Thanks
Josh
