awesome-discord-communities's Introduction

Howdy

I'm either sleeping, doing dishes, or trying to decipher something on my notebook while lying on an imaginary boat upon a winding river where the water is dark, glooming cloud overhead, and the boat is sinking.

awesome-discord-communities's Issues

Icons taking up too much storage

As the numbers of communities growing, the unique server icons uploaded along with them are adding up on the page load time. Currently the icons are mostly stored in .png format, a better compressed format like WebP would be more efficient.

Discord Development Section

The reddit wiki linked there is outdated since years.
Instead https://libs.advaith.io/ should be linked.

Advaiths list was recently updated with all known information and is a way better source to determine what to use due to the overview of major feature implementations.

Add r/CodingHelp

The r/CodingHelp subreddit, designed to help anyone but especially those new to programming, has a Discord server that sees a lot of users asking questions about all sorts of different languages as well as more general questions on how to get started etc. I think it should be added as a valuable resource for getting help, new or experienced in programming.

Still maintained?

I see this project hasn’t been updated in over 2 years – is anyone aware of any alternative curated lists? I’ve found Discord listings hard to navigate as the search isn’t always giving super relevant results for my search terms compared to this list.

Toxic community

Community name that is currently listed:
Discord-Linux

Describe the issue:
Is there an invite link that is invalid, or notable channels need to be updated?

The community is not that accepting of people who may use other distributions and is known to argue often, which discourages users. For example, a user posted that they loved arch Linux because in their words 'it is bleeding edge and good looking' to which 2 of the active members started arguing with them over how Arch is just a terminal and that any distro is better than the hell that is 'arch'. Another user was talking with the arch enjoyer, saying how arch is a very good learning tool for Linux and that it is akin to a uni course.

The other members then started arguing with them over how arch does not teach anyone how Linux works and that you're better off using anything else (because no other distro installs like arch?). The argument quickly devolved when a member said that the arch user was 'strawmaning' because they said that no other distro has a handbook/wiki like Arch to guide you through the instillation. Upon which the arch user told them they are toxic and to 'get some #####' and were then promptly banned.

I do not talk much in the server as I joined out of curiosity but I often see how they argue with new users and the like over nitpicky things until the other person gets frustrated and banned. I worry that such a community is hurting the Linux community and at least should not be listed as a recommendation here, or frankly anywhere. Frequently do new users get greeted with 'just google it' or 'read how x works' when they ask how to fix an issue, they even ban people who go to DMs to help people which may use Linux Mint, because according to their rules such distros are banned and they do not allow DM support.

Expected:
What do you want to replace the community with regarding the aforementioned issue?

I recommend that the community is removed from the list and in the future a more suitable one added, the other Linux discords are completely fine and succinct.

How many communities to add to ML/DS is too many?

I've been collecting a group of Machine Learning/Data Science/Programming Discords, short list below. All of them are active, and I was going to make a github inspired by yours just for data science discords, but figured better to merge in so there's one place. The list I have is below, obviously not cleaned up yet and I would go through to clean it to fit the standards listed for this repository, but before I do, wanted to see if there were any thoughts before I just added 32 more discords.

Add "back to top" link at the end of every section.

With the table of contents, you can easily search for what you're looking for. You can also use the alt/⌘ + left arrow to go back to the previous section and search using the word search ctrl + f.
This is a good method, but I tried going to the table of contents again and I had to use the scrollbar. It's not a big deal using it, but since you have the cursor hovering over the list, you have to move the cursor to the scrollbar and then drag it to the top.
It will be easier if you had a "Back to top" button at the end of each section (just the sections, not sub-sections).
The button could be something like ⬆ back to top, linking to the table of contents (Contents).
This is a minimum recommendation and it doesn't affect reality, but it's just a recommendation I think it could be better in my opinion, while I was navigating through the list.
