I have been working on my thesis with this template for a very long time. Everything looked fine until I recently updated my latex packages. Then errors occur. I come back and compiled the original raw template, it returned figure & table errors as well.

I figured there must be some incompatibility between the dissertation.tex package commands and the umdiss.cls environment. It turns out if I change every float option for figure or table : \begin{...}[] to [H] instead of [!hbt] or others, errors are solved. I am not sure but I think the issue comes from the use of 'float' package.
