net_http_errors's Introduction

Net::HTTP::Errors

A simple way for catching all errors raised by Net::HTTP.

As you might know, Ruby’s Net::HTTP library can raise all kinds of errors, including:

  • Timeout::Error when the request takes too long to complete,

  • SocketError when the domain name cannot be resolved,

  • EOFError due to Keep-Alive timeout.

Remembering which errors to rescue from can be a pain. This gem solves that problem.

Inspired by tammersaleh.com/posts/rescuing-net-http-exceptions .

Usage

It super easy to use:

require "net/http"
require "uri"

begin
  Net::HTTP.get_response URI.parse('http://google.com/')
rescue *Net::HTTP::Errors
  puts 'uh oh!'
end

That’s it.

Installation

Use gem install:

gem install net_http_errors

Or put it in your Gemfile:

gem 'net_http_errors'

Note on Patches/Pull Requests

  • Fork the project.

  • Make your feature addition or bug fix.

  • Add tests for it. This is important so I don’t break it in a future version unintentionally.

  • Commit, do not mess with rakefile, version, or history. (if you want to have your own version, that is fine but bump version in a commit by itself I can ignore when I pull)

  • Send me a pull request. Bonus points for topic branches.
