am8-switchwire-mod's Issues

Suggested Mods/build experience

Apologies for creating this as an issue. Not really a better way to share it.

I'm in the process (nearly done) on rebuilding my AM8 into one of these.

Some changes/feedback I have are:

  • Using Stealthburner and a BLTouch for Z homing. I had a hard time figuring this out, but the mount is essentially a Voron Legacy mount. You could use either the stock Voron Legacy mount (from the voron repo) or this one, which includes the BLTouch mounting option - https://www.printables.com/model/458163-voron-legacy-carriage-mount-with-integrated-bltouc Also, FYI, the original mount is an afterburner mount, which isn't 100% compatible with stealthburner, but the stealthburner mount is backward compatible.
  • Using a toolhead CAN board, because I had one "laying around". This helps clean up the look I think, but I wanted to still use limit switches as I'm not a huge fan of sensorless homing. This presents two issues... 1. I'd like to delete the switch mount for the XZ Joint left, and make it look the same as the XZ joint right. 2. Need to locate a place on the toolhead to mount an X Limit switch. Seems like maybe the belt clamp could be a good candidate, but haven't fully figured it out yet.
  • I printed/used these stiffening parts, similar to the original AM8, to make the printer more solid. Issue is, I need to design some kind of foot now. My original build used some rubber feet screwed into the corners of those, which is what I'm still doing currently. Could either leave it or go with something to raise it up a bit more. I haven't installed the screen, so when I do I might feel I need to, to support the screen. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3128300
  • I'm looking for a jacking screw method of tightening the belts, vs the "pull and tighten" design they are currently. I recently built an Enderwire and it was nice to have jacking screws to tighten it more accurately.
  • I'd like to have some deck panels to keep things from falling onto the electronics. Going to look into designing something once I get the machine fully assembled.

Overall though, thanks very much for putting this together. Everything was straightforward to print and it's looking really nice. I'll take osm epictures once I'm done.

Enclosure ?

Since the guide rails are located on the outside, it would appear your design is not able to have a neat enclosure like a true switchwire.

working on a voron tap compatible x carriage

Hi Max,

thank your for your awesome looking modification.
Currently im planning to do this conversion on my Anet A8 and because i enjoy Voron Tap Probing in my 2.4 im heavily interested in using it on your AM8-Switchwire.

I therefore spent some hours in Fusion and tried to modify your X Carriage, making it compatible with the Tap-Baseplate. Photo attached.

Would love to here your feedback and ideas in improving the design based on your experience on this printer mod. Hopefully i did not oversee a STL-File hiding in a subfolder and provided specifically for my need... this happened to me in the past sometimes.

Would that idea be stupid? Quite theoretical so far

Brass Inserts

I see from your supplied pictures, there are some parts that require brass inserts, do you have a list of which parts need the inserts? Great Build by the way!!

Full CAD

Do you mind sharing with us the complete model and all its versions as step or even better f3d file?
