Cannot build release and debug at the same time

When switching from debug to release in visual studio generated solution, cmake tries to patch the prefix folder again, fails and stops the build.

steps to reproduce:

git clone https://github.com/MartyLake/cmake_externalproject_example.git
cd cmake_externalproject_example
mkdir build
cd build
cmake ..
cmake --build . --config Release --target package
cmake --build . --config Debug --target package

workaround: nuke the prefix folder when switching config:

git clone https://github.com/MartyLake/cmake_externalproject_example.git
cd cmake_externalproject_example
mkdir build
cd build
cmake ..
cmake --build . --config Release --target package
rm -rf nifti-prefix
cmake --build . --config Debug --target package

I am unsure how to solve this properly. Maybe not relying on git patch at all ? Haven't seen any git apply option to check if already applied.
