Introduction

LOOT is a plugin load order optimiser for:

  • Starfield
  • The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

LOOT can automatically calculate a load order that satisfies all plugin dependencies and maximises each plugin's impact on your game. It can also detect many issues, and provides a large number of plugin-specific usage notes, warnings and Bash Tag suggestions for Wrye Bash.

While LOOT can correctly handle the vast majority of plugins without help, some plugins need additional metadata to be sorted correctly. LOOT has a masterlist of metadata for each supported game, and you can add more to customise LOOT's behaviour.

LOOT helps make using mods easier, and you should still possess a working knowledge of mod load ordering. See Introduction To Load Orders for an overview.

Downloads

Releases are hosted on GitHub. Linux users should install LOOT from Flathub.

Snapshot builds are available as artifacts from GitHub Actions runs, though they are only kept for 90 days and can only be downloaded when logged into a GitHub account. To mitigate these restrictions, snapshot build artifacts include a GPG signature that can be verified using the public key hosted here, which means it's possible to re-upload the artifacts elsewhere and still prove their authenticity.

The snapshot build artifacts are named like so:

loot_<last tag>-<revisions since tag>-g<short revision ID>_<branch>-<platform>.<file extension>

Snapshot builds are also provided as single-file Flatpak bundles, which can be installed like so:

flatpak --user install ~/Downloads/loot.flatpak

You may also want to install the Adwaita theme:

flatpak install flathub org.kde.KStyle.Adwaita//6.7

Building LOOT

Windows

Refer to .github/workflows/release.yml for the build process.

The GitHub Actions workflow assumes that CMake, curl, gettext, Git, Inno Setup 6, Python, Visual Studio 2019 and 7-zip are already installed.

vslavik's precompiled Gettext binaries are probably the easiest way to get an up-to-date version of Gettext on Windows.

Linux

Refer to .github/workflows/ci.yml's flatpak job for the build process.

Building the Flatpak is relatively self-contained and should only need the following installed:

  • git
  • flatpak
  • flatpak-builder
  • python, pip and venv

Your Linux distribution may package Python, pip and venv separately.

Not all LOOT's features have been implemented for Linux builds. Issues labelled linux on LOOT's issue tracker cover such missing features where they can be implemented.

CMake Variables

LOOT uses the following CMake variables to set build parameters:

LIBLOOT_URL A URL A GitHub release archive URL The URL to get the libloot release archive from. By default, this is the URL of a libloot release archive hosted on GitHub. Specifying this is useful if you want to link to a libloot that was built and packaged locally.

LOOT_RUN_CLANG_TIDY ON, OFF OFF Whether or not to run clang-tidy during build. Has no effect when using CMake's MSVC generator.

OGDF_URL A URL A release archive URL The URL to get a source archive from.
VALVE_FILE_VDF_URL A URL A GitHub commit archive URL The URL to get a source archive from.

The URL parameters can be used to supply a local path if the archive has already been downloaded (e.g. for offline builds).

You may also need to set BOOST_ROOT if CMake cannot find Boost, and Qt6_ROOT (e.g. to C:/Qt/6.7.2/msvc2019_64) if CMake cannot find Qt.

Building The Documentation

The documentation is built using Sphinx. Install Python and make sure it's accessible from your PATH, then run:

sphinx-build -b html docs build/docs/html

If running on Linux, replace .venv\Scripts\activate with .venv/bin/activate.

Alternatively, you can use Docker to avoid changing your development environment, by running docker run -it --rm -v ${PWD}/docs:/docs/docs:ro -v ${PWD}/resources:/docs/resources:ro -v ${PWD}/build:/docs/build sphinxdoc/sphinx:7.1.2 bash to obtain a shell that you can use to run the two commands above.

Packaging Releases

Packaging scripts are provided for creating an installer on Windows and compressed archives on Windows and Linux.

Run the scripts/installer.iss Inno Setup script to build an installer executable in the build folder. If the unofficial Korean, Swedish and Simplified Chinese Inno Setup translation files are installed alongside the official translation files, then the installer script will also offer those language options. If they are not found, the installer will be built without them.

The archive packaging script requires Git, and on Windows it also requires 7-Zip, while on Linux it requires tar and xz. It can be run using python scripts/archive.py, and creates an archive for LOOT in the build folder. The archives are named as described in the Downloads section above.

The archive packaging script calls windeployqt.exe when run on Windows: it must be accessible from your PATH.

Global SKSE message translation

Requires Russian and Spanish translation.

RBB after SMIM

From what I can tell, Realistic Boat Bobbing needs to be after SMIM. (I believe this was working until the alphabetical patch?)

Load Verdant after Skyrim Flora Overhaul

"Verdant - A Skyrim Grass Plugin.esp" should load after any esps from "Skyrim Flora Overhaul" or Skyrim may crash while outdoors.
According to the Verdant mod page (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/60220):

Load this AFTER SFO and any other mods that alter the landscape, specifically mods that add grasses to the game.

It also states:

So apparently LOOT is loading my plugin BEFORE SFO 2.0+ but THAT IS NOT CORRECT. You must make a custom rule in your loot order to load Verdant after, or adjust it manually in your load order for this mod to work properly!!

I can confirm Skyrim does crash if you load them in the wrong order.

A few of these entries are in pairs that only contain a message saying the other plugin is incompatible: in such cases only one of the entries needs to be kept.

Some entries are of the Use only one format, but provide all the relevant plugin names in a condition, so can be better implemented as a finite incompatibility list.

Fix Enhanced Soul Trap.esp's messages

Blank Report Window despite IE 11 + Javascript enabled

I'm having the Blank Report Window issue with LOOT 0.6.
I have installed IE 11, enabled "Allow active content to run in files on My Computer" + disabled all security functions in IE 11 to make sure javascipt is not blocked.
I tried running LOOT through MO and without MO, both give a blank report window.
Also, I have made IE 11 my standard browser, but still end up with a blank report window.

Is there anything else I can do?

Alias corrupted plugin messages

I've seen a few This file is corrupted and should be removed as soon as possible. messages, and others with similar wording, and they could be replaced by a common message that is aliased where required.

Other wordings include:

File is corrupt and should not be used.
This file contains unexpected (or out of order) records and should be removed.
This mod contains numerous corrupted records generated with TESVSmip. It is strongly advised you remove this from your load order to avoid damage to your saves.
This file is missing records and should NOT be used
This file was released before the Creation Kit (07 Feb. 2012) and is not recommended for use and should be removed.

Searching for mentions of TESVSnip may catch others.

-1, is the same as -400, and 1 is the same as 400. I doesn't matter how it's done just so that it's consistent.

Metadata entry for USLEEP

Unofficial Skyrim Legendary Edition Patch.esp needs to be added to the metadata list. It should get the same priority settings as the USKP and if needed, should be specified to load after the 3 official DLCs.

Also if possible it should generate a warning to the user if USLEEP is active at the same time any of the previous patches are active since having any of the old patches active alongside USLEEP would be bad. Very bad.

Automatically converted compound conditions can be simplified

When the masterlist was converted from BOSS's, the converter added extra brackets in compound conditions, to compensate for the change in evaluation order.

Such compound conditions begin with (, and searching for condition: '( gives 125 matches. Most of these may have brackets that are unnecessary, so can be removed.

Crashing in Mod Organizer

I had crashing in Mod organizer.. however when I changed the header for the EXE to utilize address space above 2GB it worked fine.

Official ESMs & Unofficial Patches (v2)

According to Arthmoor's information on the load order for a future (false-flagged) version of the unofficial patches, the order for the official plugins and their patches should be:

  1. Skyrim.esm
  2. Update.esm
  3. Unofficial Skyrim Patch.esp
  4. Dawnguard.esm
  5. Unofficial Dawnguard Patch.esp
  6. Hearthfires.esm
  7. Unofficial Hearthfire Patch.esp
  8. Dragonborn.esm
  9. Unofficial Dragonborn Patch.esp
  10. Everything else.

Probably the best way to go about doing this is to give all those plugins a very negative priority, then add metadata for

  • Update.esm -> Unofficial Skyrim Patch.esp
  • Unofficial Skyrim Patch.esp -> Dawnguard.esm
  • Unofficial Dawnguard Patch.esp -> Hearthfires.esm
  • Unofficial Hearthfire Patch.esp -> Dragonborn.esm

These will need version checks though, since it results in an invalid load order for the current unofficial patches - Arthmoor has said that the false-flagged plugins will be bumped to v2.0, but after their release the versions should be double-checked to ensure BOSS is checking the right version string.

I haven't been following the conversion, but I think that what's currently in the repository is from before the v2 masterlist got frozen, so I'd recommend:

  1. Generate a new masterlist using the converter.
  2. Use @SilentSpike's mad regex skillz to give you 100 problems pseudo-manually convert some remaining stuff (like req and inc messages). Please don't do a "replace all" though, do them one at a time and commit in small batches, so that a) you don't miss anything, and b) we can read the diffs.
  3. Convert anything that can't be helped along with regex.

The masterlist converter will need an update first, so organise amongst yourselves what you'll be doing, so that you don't accidentally counter each other's work.

Small PerMa update

Hey Wrinkly, I made a small error, can you remove the 'Apocalypse - The Spell Package.esp' after 'PerkusMaximus_Master.esp' portion that was added in 0cf9879. I don't know what made me put that on there, but it's wrong. Really sorry for the trouble.

Requiem load order incorrect

LOOT insists on placing Requiem near the top of the masterlist, and the Requiem for the Indifferent patch after the Bashed Patch. The Requiem manual recommends Requiem being placed immediately before the Bashed Patch (but before patches such as the AOS Requiem patch), and the RftI skyproc patch after the BP.

Aliasing for obsolete plugin messages

Right now there are roughly 500 "obsolete plugin" messages. I will be going through the masterlist and replacing the majority of these with an alias to a common message.

Some, perhaps many, of the existing messages will not be generic, either containing a link to update using, or the new plugin to be using instead. I will be removing any of the latter information, as it is liable to go out of date just as the original plugin did, and is a detail that should really be deferred to the mod author to inform the user about.

For the links, I'll store them as location metadata, unless the link is not obvious (i.e. googling the plugin doesn't return the link), in which case I'll leave the existing message in place.

Some "obsolete plugin" messages use CRC checks, because the plugin isn't actually obsolete, just outdated. In such cases I'm leaving the existing message in place, but I think they should probably be reworded to say "outdated" instead of "obsolete".

Bad regex: (alldlcsharedchest|sharedplayerchest)?\.esp

The question mark there means it doesn't have to match anything other than ".esp".

This might work OK in BOSS, but it should be fixed just in case. I'll fix it here and on Google Code, and close this issue when I have.

nav data

If I add a number to the nav: field in a dirty: structure, will LOOT automatically add the standard "This plugin contains deleted navmesh blah blah bad for your game blah blah"?

Because I notice there are still hundreds of those messages fully written out in the masterlist.

Many of these are cothing and armour mods requiring a body mod, so they could also be aliased. Some of these requirements may be masters, in which case a req entry is not needed.

Bandoliers for NPCs

This is in regards to Bandoliers for NPCs (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/17805/?). Specifically, the files BandolierForNPCMasterFile.esp (default version, with or without Dawnguard) and BandolierForNPCsCheaperBandoliers_BalancedWeight.esp (alternately: BandolierForNPCsCheaperBandoliers_BalancedWeight_Dawnguard.esp). I have all the required masters (Dawnguard.esm, Dr_Bandolier.esp, Dr_BandolierDG.esp). LOOT reports errors on both files "Use non-Dawnguard version). If I swap out these two files for the non-DG counterparts, LOOT gives error message "Use Dawnguard version." Most peculiar. I looked in the masterlist and can't see a problem, so I obviously still have much to learn.
Also, as long as I'm here about bandoliers, if one is using 'Cloaks of Skyrim' AND 'Winter is Coming' AND 'Immersive Armors' there is a merged patch to replace the BandolierforNPCs(WIC_V2)(CloaksofSkyrim).esp at http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/49195/? so you might want to point people there. I looked it over in TESVEdit and used it in game for a bit. Seems to be properly done.

Conflict: Alternate Start - Live Another Life.esp/World_Map_Height_Pitch_Tweak_170.esp

EDIT: Affected is the "MNAM - Data Map" entries for "Cell Coordinates" and especially "Camera Data". Alternate Start just duplicates the default values from update.esm and skyrim.esm, where World Map is actually modifying those values for camera changes. This picture [shows] the differences nicely:

Possible aliasing candidates with string substitution

As I'm combing through the masterlist, I've spotted a few patterns that are good candidates for aliasing with string substitution, and I'm listing them here, so that they're not forgotten.

Use only one %1%.
Delete. Already included in %1%.
Delete. Fixed in official patch %1%. (also appears as Delete. Fixed in Bethesda''s official update %1%.)
Original file was released before the Creation Kit (07 Feb. 2012) a compatibility patch fixed and cleaned with TES5Edit can be obtained here. %1%

The USKP has its own "already included" alias, it may be worth doing the same for the other unofficial patches, since I've seen the Dawguard and Dragonborn patches come up multiple times in the same context.

Also, many of the Use only one %1%. messages could be better implemented using a single regex entry for all the plugins the message applies to.

Merge duplicate entries

Some plugins have more than one entry (may not be duplicates). This is OK, but it would be neater for them to be merged. I wrote a short Python script to find them, and the following came up for this masterlist:

Alternate Start - Live Another Life.esp

NightStar (BGS) has reported that Alternate Start - Live Another Life.esp needs to load late on in the load order, since it's a fairly sensitive mod, and that it needs to load after Unofficial Dawnguard Patch.esp because otherwise its Dawnguard support won't be activated.

Book Covers Skyrim and Even Better Quest Objectives

Due to updates for both mods, Book Covers Skyrim will need to load after Even Better Quest Objectives. Since Book Covers Skyrim includes EBQO's edits to the books and journals, it's better to let Book Covers load after EBQO so that all the changes come through.

USKP Patches

Deleted Navmesh Messages Should Be Cleaned Up

Overview

Deleted navmesh messages take up a very large amount of space in the masterlist right now, and we should try to reduce or eliminate those messages where possible.

The masterlist currently contains 192 plugins with deleted navmesh messages.

  • Only 12 of these messages are conditioned to a specific CRC.
  • However, 174 of the 192 plugins include a dirty info structure with at least 1 CRC listed.

Possible Solution

The dirty info structure is already designed to include a nav: key that should list the number of deleted navmeshes. Using this key more consistently would eliminate the need to have deleted navmesh messages altogether. However, the nav: key is very underutilized. It currently appears only 12 times in the masterlist.

After chatting with WrinklyNinja, I think the best strategy is to remove existing navmesh messages for any plugin where a dirty CRC is also listed, and just add a nav: key to that existing dirty info structure that indicates the number of deleted navmeshes that were specified in the message. Because dirty info and navmesh info are usually reported together, it seems very likely that the existing navmesh messages correspond to the existing dirty CRCs. There's a small chance that this change could introduce some erroneous info into the masterlist, but if that happens, a user is likely to report the issue once the error is discovered.

Follow Ups

Missing CRCs

Any mods with a deleted navmesh message that do not also have a dirty info structure should be listed here so that they can be followed up on. We should try to find the CRCs for these mods so that we can incorporate their navmesh information into a dirty info structure and keep things standardized across the masterlist.

Improved Tutorial Links

We should also add a link to the &dirtyUtil anchor that will redirect users somewhere that they can learn about fixing deleted navmesh records. We currently link to this tutorial. Wrinkly suggested that we could make some improvements to the TES5Edit Cleaning Guide, and include some more prominent links from that guide to videos and tutorials for cleaning itms, udrs, and deleted navmesh records. We could then update the &dirtyUtil anchor something like this:

Hi, Loot exe crashes when I run it in Mod Organiser. Run outside MO it works just fine. What's the catch?
