Add +buildX suffix
Basically do something along the same lines as here: https://github.com/lncm/docker-lnd/blob/master/scripts/new-release.sh
It helps us to never override git tags, and always leaves a trace on the Docker Hub (continues to work identical if someone uses a build-specific, or sha256-specific tags instead).

How to change log settings for writing to a log file
Hi,
I'm running your docker bitcoin node.
The default output is logged to the console (stdout). But I want to log to a log file.
Digging into the bitcoin.conf options and settings I found the below settings:
debuglogfile=/data/.bitcoin/debug.log
debug=1
printtoconsole=0
I have also checked this doc: https://www.bitcoinabc.org/doc/0.22.0/man/bitcoind/
This stops output to the console, but also generates no logfiles.
Can you please assist on this how to get the output written to logfiles?

Final Docker images are very big
They used to be 20-50MB, now are over 200MB.
Something's not right, and needs fixing.
Documentation issue
Container name for Bitcoin is no longer called "bitcoind", on my last image is just called "bitcoin", so the documentation needs to be updated accordingly.
I refer to README.md -> Interact section where some examples are shown.

Compile in SQLite support
It seems like these builds don't compile in support for SQLite which is required for descriptor wallets.
This causes issues when using these builds with Specter: cryptoadvance/specter-desktop#980
Is there any reason it's not included? Can we add it if not?
Also maybe it would be better to use the pre-built signed release binaries in these images, that way there will be less surprises, more reliable behaviour, and the logic will also be better tested.
Verify format of git-tag before build
Should be vX.X.X or vX.X.X.X.
NOTE: bitcoin core does not follow semver.

If we use git instead of tarball pulls, we can build rc versions too.
Changing user ID in docker-compose to match system fails to start bitcoind
I do not want to use the user ID 1000 as this does not match my system. Instead I would like to use 996. The permissions of the data directory match this and I update the docker-compose.yml to use the correct user ID in the user field.
However this fails with the following error
bitcoind | Error: filesystem error: cannot create directories: Permission denied [/.bitcoin/wallets]
Is this something that I might be doing wrong? Or is this a bug? Or is it a feature request to allow user IDs other than 1000? I'm not sure but I would like to be able to do this

In the world of Bitcoin using :latest can have unpredictable consequences let's nuke it completely.
Other than that, let's use minor-version tags, ex. v0.17, v0.18 etc… Can be done easily using https://github.com/meeDamian/tag-suggestions .
Container doesn't start after latest update
0.21.0 build19 crashes on trying to load sqlite3 so. Did you forget to include sqlite in the container?
bitcoin data saving to /root/.bitcoin instead of /data/.bitcoin
Documentation suggests that the bitcoin chain is being saved to /data/.bitcoin but in reality it's being saved to /root/.bitcoin, at least when using user: 0:0 in the docker compose file. If this is intended behavior, documentation should be updated.
IPv6 support
The container does not seem to have IPv6 support. When I try to ping an IPv6 address from within the container I get:

Optimize C flags
Removing the debug info like https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/master/doc/build-unix.md#memory-requirements makes the compile use less memory and potentially faster, as well as reducing the final size a bit. @nolim1t Can you add this when releasing 0.22?

How to connect to RPC interface?
I'm trying to write a bash script to connect to the RPC interface via curl. I have port 8332 open, but I don't see any documentation for how to setup a RPC user/password. Am I missing something?
Also, I don't see a bitcoin.conf file anywhere either. I was just going to bind-mount one manually. Is this the suggested way?
Include a mechanism to set local timezone
It would be great if one could pass the local timezone variable to the container to use, especially handy for the bitcoin debug.log.
For this to work , it requires the tzdata package installed in the image, according to this wiki article.
Then the user would pass an environment variable in compose:
environment:
- TZ=America/Santiago
or a -e in the docker command line.
Daily qemu performance
This issue contains timings of bitcoind builds on various emulated architectures.
exec format error
Getting this when starting container on amd64 alpine linux 3.9.4:
standard_init_linux.go:207: exec user process caused "exec format error"
Switch to clang?
Not sure if there's a specific reason for using GCC, but I recently dockerized Elements, a fork of Bitcoin Core, and switching to clang saved about an hour of build time. So if you're looking for faster builds, maybe using clang would make sense.
Move CI build to Travis
Docker Hub doesn't make the log of a build public… Travis does. It's better if it is public.
Consider adding a variant for building on a glibc compliant system

Can someone help clarify something for me? The docs say launch with this command:

port 8333 will be reachable for the peer-to-peer communication,
port 28332 will be reachable for ZMQ block notifications,
port 28333 will be reachable for ZMQ transaction notifications,
However, when I netstat -l inside the container i do not see anything listening on 8333. This is what I see:
