Some questions related to your article in New Phytologist (10.1111/nph.17674)

Dear Ph.D. Alexander,

I am a doctoral student of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

I am vary interesting in your articles: "The evolutionary assembly of forest communities along environmental gradients: recent diversification or sorting of pre-adapted clades?". The ideas that decomposed the species into among-clade and within-clade components are novel and interesting. I have some questions about the “intersection point” in the article:

Firstly, what does the intersection point mean in the Conceptual models of Figure 1? In the result of 30 Myr, there is a intersection point in near 0 m elevation in large plots (Fig. 4a), while there is no intersection point in small plots (Fig. 4d). In the result of 60 Myr, there are same intersection point in near 1200 m elevation in both large plots and small plots (Fig. S4a,d).

Secondly, What does the different intersection point in 30 Myr and 60 Myr (0 to 1200 m) mean? Can the different elevation of the intersection point represent 60 to 30 Myr of uplift of Central Andes?

Whether the “intersection point” of different periods can reveal the mountain uplift process and speciation mechanism from another aspect?

Thank you very much for your kind consideration and I am looking forward to your early reply.

Sincerely, yours.

Lijuan Li
