Jungle

A mini e-commerce application built with Rails 6.1 for purposes of teaching Rails by example.

Setup

  1. Run bundle install to install dependencies
  2. Create config/database.yml by copying config/database.example.yml
  3. Create config/secrets.yml by copying config/secrets.example.yml
  4. Run bin/rails db:reset to create, load and seed db
  5. Create .env file based on .env.example
  6. Sign up for a Stripe account
  7. Put Stripe (test) keys into appropriate .env vars
  8. Run bin/rails s -b 0.0.0.0 to start the server

Database

If Rails is complaining about authentication to the database, uncomment the user and password fields from config/database.yml in the development and test sections, and replace if necessary the user and password development to an existing database user.

Stripe Testing

Use Credit Card # 4111 1111 1111 1111 for testing success scenarios.

More information in their docs: https://stripe.com/docs/testing#cards

jungle-rails's Issues

Redirect typo for the Create action of the admin/products controller

There is an issue with creating a product using the form. It does not redirect you to the proper route after successful product creation.

Line 15 from app/controllers/admin/products_controller.rb reads:

redirect_to [:admin, products], notice: 'Product created!'

When it should instead be:

redirect_to [:admin, :products], notice: 'Product created!'

This is because products haven't actually been defined. The behaviour we want requires that to be :products instead.

The admin form for creating new products do not detect that you have selected a category.

If you tried to create a new product using the admin/products creation page, you will run into an error where it tells you that you cannot be submitting a product with a blank category (even if you actually did choose a category).

Line 38 from app/views/admin/products/new.html.erb reads:

<%= form.select :category, options_from_collection_for_select...

When it should read:

<%= form.select :category_id, options_from_collection_for_select...

This is because the app is expecting :category_id to be passed through.

Bad AR code in partial!

The partial _item.html.erb contains a AR find method that doesn't even make sense (isn't needed)
