Ph.D. Student

ABOUT ME

Hi! I am Kritika Garg. I am a Computer Science Ph.D. Student at Old Dominion University under the supervision of Dr. Michael L. Nelson. I'm a Web Science and Digital Libraries (WS-DL) research group member. My research includes web archiving, social media, and natural language processing. In the past, I have been affiliated with the IBM Research India and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.

Education

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science| Old Dominion University at Virginia, U.S.A (August 2019)
  • B.Tech. in Information Technology| Netaji Subhas University of Technology at Delhi, India (July 2015)

Work Experience

Graduate Teaching Assistant @ Old Dominion University (August 2019 - Present)

  • Teaching Assistant for CS625, Data Visualization for Dr. Faryaneh Poursardar.
  • Instructor for CS121, Introduction to Information Literacy and Research for Scientists.
  • Teaching Assistant for CS361, Data Structures and Algorithms for Dr. Jay Morris.

Graduate Research Assistant @ Old Dominion University (August 2019 - Present), MENTOR: Dr. Michael Nelson, Dr. Michele Weigle

  • Working as a Graduate Research Assistant at ODU CS, under the supervision of Dr.Michael Nelson, in Web Archiving Social Media Analysis.
  • Time-Series analysis: Employed Markov chains for analysis of life-cycle of webpages through various HTTP status code transitions. Applied Shannon entropy & Compression algorithms to analyze the complexity of page lifecycle
  • Survival analysis: Performed probabilistic modeling to estimate the survival probability of web pages over time, utilized Kaplan-Meier method reporting a half-life of 2.1 years

Software Developer @ Internet Archive (May 2021 - August 2021), Mentor: Mark Graham

  • Worked for the Wayback Machine team at Internet Archive. The internship aimed to help improve the replay of Wayback Machine.
  • Bash-Scripting for Data Scraping & Analysis: Build bash scripts for curating a paywall dataset, exploring the affecting factors, such as the variability of web crawling tools concerning JavaScript and/or Cookies settings.
  • Data Visualization: Build a script on javascript on d3.js to visualize the citation network database curated using bash-scripting

Research Intern @ IBM, India (May 2018 - July 2018), *Mentor: Dr. Kuntal Dey

  • NLP (Natural Language Processing) Performed Network Analysis over the topics in the network, focusing on information diffusion, homophily, and data lifecycles. Published work in ECIR 2018.
  • Clustering Embedding: Developed a novel method for topic lifecycle analysis on Twitter, integrating GloVe embed- dings, K-means clustering, and PageRank via NetworkX, to map topic evolution and user influence.
  • Supervised Machine learning: Developed “SocioTempr,” a Hashtag Prediction model for Twitter. Ingrain the social and temporal aspects with a supervised model based on word and sentence embeddings.

Research Intern @ Indian Institute of Technology, India (_May 2017 - August 2017), Mentor: Dr. Kuntal Dey, Dr. Saroj Kaushik

  • Worked as a Research Intern at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Delhi under the supervision of Prof. (Dr.) Saroj Kaushik and Dr. Kuntal Dey of IBM Research India.
  • The core area of research is Natural Language Processing in the context of Social Networks.
