I came across this on WPTavern and thought I'd lend a hand. Here's a filter I run on the_title for this sort of thing: https://github.com/justintadlock/hybrid-core/blob/master/functions/utility.php#L194
Another alternative is to always add a "Permalink" link in the post meta/byline area.

Yeah. I was considering either filtering the title or adding a 'Read More' link to the excerpt. Leaning towards filtering the title to maintain the same UI (instead of some posts having buttons and some using the title as the link).
