When I explained this to a friend, he pointed out how nicely this is implemented on YouTube where one can toggle a sidebar menu. Perhaps such a solution will provide the right compromise?

Thanks for the feedback. I toyed around with several different options for the navigation menu and I simply liked this option the best. These styles are easily overridden with CSS (as you can see on my personal site). The overlay is completely CSS and only triggered by JavaScript.

In other words, this is not a change I am going to make with this theme.

@kopepasah thanks for the swift reply. This makes complete sense, and is a pretty cool solution. I will mess around with the CSS to get the desired solution.
