github-desktop-install's Introduction

GitHub desktop install / update / uninstall script

This script is capable to download and install the most recent GitHub desktop version for your Linux system. It is also able to update and uninstall GitHub desktop. By default, the script will automatically check if an update is available. The script works with deb and rpm packages. If your system does not use deb or rpm packages, it will fall back to the available AppImage.

Usage

The installation script will be downloaded with curl and afterward executed.

Tool Command
curl bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/kontr0x/github-desktop-install/main/installGitHubDesktop.sh)"
wget bash -c "$(wget -O- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/kontr0x/github-desktop-install/main/installGitHubDesktop.sh)"

Manual execution

It is always a good idea to inspect the script you are getting from the internet. Please feel free to first inspect the script and execute the script manually with bash.

# --------------------
# curl method
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/kontr0x/github-desktop-install/main/installGitHubDesktop.sh -o installGitHubDesktop.sh
# wget method
wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/kontr0x/github-desktop-install/main/installGitHubDesktop.sh
# --------------------
bash ./installGitHubDesktop.sh

Optional flags

Flag Description
-m (install | uninstall) Install or uninstall GitHub desktop.
-v Enable verbose mode.

Tested the script on:

  • Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS, Mint 21.1
  • Fedora 37 Workstation

The project came to life as a result of berkorbay's presumably discontinued gist page, which can be viewed here.

Please feel free to contribute.

github-desktop-install's Issues

script failing: does not exist, check your permissions!

I am trying to use the script to install github desktop in my Linux machine (Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS)

I have tried curl, wget and even manually downloading installGitHubDesktop.sh and running the sh script (both in sudo and in user mode), but I keep getting the following error:

Starting install script...

curl: no URL specified!
curl: try 'curl --help' or 'curl --manual' for more information
Downloading ...
Warning: Remote filename has no length!

Download complete!
does not exist, check your permissions!

I tried to give the file executable permissions but whatever I do, it keeps failing with the above error.
please help me if I am missing out on something.

.sh extension removed after download

Running:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/kontr0x/github-desktop-install/main/installGitHubDesktop.sh -o installGitHubDesktop

removes the .sh extension because of -o installGitHubDesktop without the .sh after installGitHubDesktop. As such, running bash ./installGitHubDesktop fails to execute.

minor issue

Implement update functionality

  • extend the check of the installed package to return the version number
  • compare the installed version against the newest in the repository

remove the installation file after successful install

It's irritating that after successful installation, the script doesn't auto remove the downloaded artifacts.

example, for my case, the script downloaded GitHubDesktop-linux-amd64-3.3.3-linux2.deb, which I had to manually remove with rm GitHubDesktop-linux-amd64-3.3.3-linux2.deb.

It would be good to add a cleanup line at the end of script, and it would be a good practice as well as help in saving disk space.
