The $ operator captures the slice of input matched by an expression.

And FWIW, if you don't actually need a string slice to do something with, I'd write it like this:

rule kind() -> Type
  = "empty" {Type::Empty}
  / "unit" {Type::Unit}
  / "bool" {Type::Boolean}
  / "nat" {Type::Natural}
  / "int" {Type::Integer}

Oh nice, I missed that in the documentation, thanks! I also had another question that I couldn't find in the docs: is it possible to manually raise a ParseError from within a rule?
