I noticed the Boxcar mention,, so I thought about notifo.

Boxcar and notifo have the advantage that you dont need an iPhone app to 
support them and are funded/stable platforms, too. 

Don't store credentials in plist file, but in the user's keychain. Since the 
API-key is not really a secret and cannot be used to manipulate the account it 
is ok for now.

Create a smaller menu bar item to save menu bar real estate.

There's no conclusive error message after a failed send (e.g. because of an 
invalid API key) if Growl is not installed. In this case error messages go to 
system log only.

Boxcar support should be relatively easy. 

Any plans to add support for pushover.net?
