upon browser restart or session restore, tabs sometimes get moved to different tab groups

Upon browser restart or session restore, tabs sometimes get moved to different
tab groups. The assignment appears to be random.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Use TabGroups Manager.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect that the tab groups will remain in the same tab groups that I place
them in. However, some tabs are reassigned to different tab groups whenever I
restart the browser or restore a session.

Double Menu Overlay

Tabgroups Manager v. 2013.04.001 (current stable)

Close Firefox. Open Firefox. I keep getting a double menu overlay whenever I
right click on the tab group at the top. The only way to make it not display
both menus is by clicking on an open space on the TabGroups bar to cause it to
display the bottom menu only. After that, the bottom menu will not appear when
clicking on a group button.

Suspended groups are lost on restart (FF19/20+)

On recent Firefox releases (FF20+ and perhaps FF19), suspended tab groups are
"lost" on restart/restore.

This is quite widely reported and there are a lot of tips to revert to older
versions of Firefox to avoid it, so I guess it's confirmed.

(It's unclear what the status of FF19 is. Some web pages say the bug affects
Firefox 20+, and Firefox 19 is ok, but when I tried, I had the same issue in
Firefox 19 and had to go back to FF18 to work around.)

Cannot change current tab with mouse or reach tab menu

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. click into the tab bar with primary mouse button, on an inactive tab.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect the inactive tab to become the active tab and the browser window to
show the web page of the clicked tab.

Instead nothing(!) changes at all.
(I am able to change the active tab by Keyboard but it is nowhere near as
usable. In fact I think I should downgrade Firefox or get a newer
Tabgroupsmanager version)

Second Symptom:
1. click into the tab bar on ANY tab with the right/secondary mouse button.

Expected:
tab menu opens

Instead a generic Firefox Toolbar menu opens (with entries: "Move To Menu",
"Remove from Toolbar", "Menu Bar", "Bookmarks Toolbar"... "Customize").

System Info:
Tabgroupsmanager version 2013-07-07-002, which did not show this problem with
FFox 26.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

Firefox 29.0.1, which shows this problem all the time, after restart of Firefox
and Windows.

I also use TabMix Plus 0.4.0.5.

Please recommend alternative of TGM - I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT IT!

Recently TGM appeared to have STACK related problem......Memory usage totally
fucked up!

It will fail to save session/ run during normal use.
Also it will lost all of its session data even after firefox closed.
The only solution is to restore a former backup...

Please, I know rewrite this addon is a HUGE workload, and I won't request that.
I know you guys are doing volunteering job...

All I want is an alternative addon of firefox/chrome

Please, if you know any(it has to be at least as good as TGM), please let us
know!

I have more that 1000+ tabs and groups....

TabGroups Manager should use native Tab Groups, not its own repository

It seems that best integration with the latest versions of Firefox would be
achieved if the TGM add-on used native Tab Groups interchangeably with other
add-ons and the built-in Panorama engine. Instead, TGM stores its own catalogue
of tab groups and tabs.

A new release of TGM should utilize native Tab Groups such that the groups
remain even if TGM is removed from Firefox. In this way, Panorama and other
functionality that use native Tab Groups can interchangeably access them
alongside TGM.

Updated To TabGroups Manager 2013.07.07.002-fx.xpi -- MultiRow Open Tabs Problem; Blank Rows of Chrome

I was having problems with TabGroups Manager 2011.11.28.1 ...

A lot of tabs sticking, overlapping, not being able to close, etc...

Finally got fed up and started hunting to see if there was a fork - found this
group/this team. Uploaded & implemented:
TabGroups Manager 2013.04.10.001-fx.xpi

Still had similar problems.

Uploaded TabGroups Manager 2013.07.07.002-fx.xpi

And had instant problems with multi-row open tab capabilities in BOTH 'TabMix
Plus' and 'Tab Ultilies - updated fork'.

I thought the problem was theirs and dealt with their forums - no one could
reproduce the situation. So, I started systematically disabling add-ons and
discovered the culprit.

Something in the beta messes up with any attempt to have tabs go into
multi-rows; it randomly makes them single row, without arrows for easy scroll &
search. If the requirements are toggled back and forth enough times it will
give multi-row tabs, but after a certain (seemingly random) number of tabs - or
one extra past the middle of the 2nd row?

Empty space opens up to take up a THIRD to ONE HALF of screen real estate. Just
empty chrome - which if clicked on only gives options to customize icons or
view or not view toolbars.

This is on windows 7, with Pale Moon 24.02, which is equal to about Firefox 24
to 25.

Right click for session save not working on ver 29

IN the latest Firefox version 29.
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Right click above tabs brings up context menu to allow session save.
2. As soon as you mouse over the right click menu it disappears
3. And replaced by the Restore, Minimise, Maximise menu.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expect to have the TabGroups Manager right click menu remain available instead
of being replaced by the Windows Minmise, Maximise, Restore menu

System Info:
What version of TabGroups Manager are you using? Was using 2013.07.07, but

Would like to know if it is possible add a feature into the settings to delete

If "browser.sessionstore.restore_hidden_tabs" is not changed to TRUE, open tabs and their history may be "lost" on restore/restart

TGM uses hidden tabs in some way. If tabs are not fully loaded, or unloaded, or
some other circumstances apply, then after a restart or restore, these tabs
will reload as "new tab" or missing, and will be completely lost. Their tab
history, and other data allowing BACK or restore also gets completely lost.

I wrote this up on Mozilla forums (with its fix) a while back, and since then I
have also came across at other users who have had the same perplexing "tabs
being randomly lost" issue with TGM+Firefox.

The issue is not recent, and not hard to fix, but it seems the original
developer never fixed it.

The fix is that TGM must set (and check on startup, or override!)
"browser.sessionstore.restore_hidden_tabs" to TRUE.

Restoring previously saved session results in JSON.parse error

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Save session and then close the browser
2. Open browser the next day and attempt to restore previously saved session
3. Receive error

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Restoration of previously saved session but instead I get a JSON.parse error.
If I choose another previous day, it will work fine. It is random at when it
will actually restore the session from the immediate previous day.

Exporting Hibernated Groups to eg. an HTML list of links

I would like to suggest adding a function (or a stand alone program) to export
the hibernated groups to (preferably) an HTML file, either from within TGM or
by running a separate program on the save files.

The reason is simple. With many hibernated groups (I used to have around a
thousand, taking up around 100MB each file), each timer back-up takes a lot of
time, freezing up Firefox completely - up to 10+ minutes on my (not very fast)
laptop and I like the back-ups to be each hour, so lots of forced downtime.

Main groups (categories) with subgroups would make the hibernated tabs system
even better, as it would allow a logical structure helping a lot when
researching different topics and if access could be locked with a
pw on selected categories/main groups, the trees would almost be touching the
skies.
It would be a fast way to make link lists on a given topic as well.

I tried bashing the save files around a little, in an attempt to restore my
links after a Firefox update, but with the time I had, I didn't get far and the
format strikes me as unnecessarily complicated (and heavy), as I cannot imagine
that each link would really need the wast amount of file memory it seems to
use. A simple record format with: Group name, Link, Link text/title and perhaps
position in group seems to me to be the important stuff.

A feature to hibernate only some of the tabs in a group would be awesome as
well, to keep open tabs to a manageable number when on a research stretch.

TGM _is_ a killer app as it stands, please add the above to make it the King of
apps :)

If you could at least make the record format public, I will make a "Hibernated
to HTML" converter and make it P.D. or whatever license you prefer.

during a session, tabs managed by TGM get "locked" and other visual/functional issues appear over time

If you run a decently-lengthed session in a browser, eventually you will run
into tab placement / useability issues.

Specifically, I have seen the following:

1. Tabs occasionally disappear on their own.
2. When closing / manipulating tabs in a group, various tabs gt "stuck" or
locked into place.
3. Occasionally, a space will open up where a tab should be; subsequently, no
other tab can be moved there.
4. Occasionally, a tab turns black and cannot be used.

I have seen this behaviour with TGM in production versions of Firefox 18 - 21.

TGM groups lose consistency with inbuilt tab groups

TGM groups appear to use the same structure as Firefox's Panorama. This can be
seen by CTRL-SHIFT-E to view tabs groups in Panorama, which shows visually the
same groups as TGM does in its bar. ("[X]" to exit Panorama)

However TGM is only updating part of the inbuilt Tab Group structures. As
groups are created or tabs moved between them, Firefox loses tab group
consistency between the two.

It's much easier to explain by showing how to reproduce it.

1. Along with TGM, install Multiple Tab Handler, and two other extensions: Pano
and All-in-one sidebar. Configure the last two extensions so that Pano is
always visible in the sidebar (makes it easier to see).

2. Now, have fun! Create some groups, suspend some groups, drag/move tabs
between groups, and in the Pano sidebar, select a bunch of tabs and drag them
to the tab bar or elsewhere in the Pano list, to move them between groups.

(If Pano shows incorrect group names, or its grouping or ordering of tabs doesn't match that shown by TGM, that's good, it's what we're looking for!)

3. So far so good. If you do this, you'll probably find Pano showing tabs in
groupings that don't match TGM, and tab groups with numeric "names" (2, 7) that
don't match the groups TGM is showing.

4. Now... click CTRL-SHIFT-E to flick to Panorama view. Suddenly, Panorama does
some kind of database update or refresh, and if you exit Panorama, you'll now
find Pano sidebar shows tab groups that have been updated/refreshed, and *do*
suddenly match TGM's.

Obviously there is some kind of update or refresh callback/hook that should be
happening when TGM moves tabs and groups round, but isn't happening, and
instead the refresh can be manually triggered by the user switching in and out
of Panorama.

Suggestion

I would like to suggest that tgm be ported over to Seamonkey
http://www.seamonkey-project.org/ after using FF since before 1.0, all of the
changes have not helped addons survive.
As i use TGM and keep around 1,000 tabs in groups its an addon that I would not
like to live without.

from http://gooeysoftware.com/mozaddons/
Why use SeaMonkey instead of Firefox?

Short answer:
Firefox no longer provides the kind of comprehensive browser interface that
Firefox 3 did, and this is by design. SeaMonkey still does, and this is because
of a more conservative approach taken by the SeaMonkey project to modifying
their interface that is unlikely to change.

I therefore recommend that users who wish to have a comprehensive browser
interface switch to using SeaMonkey as their main browser. It uses the same
Gecko rendering engine as Firefox so you'll stay up-to-date with web
technologies, Javascript speed, security, etc. Its changes to the user
interface are far rarer and less intense, making interface-related extensions
much easier to maintain, and of course as mentioned before, the browser
interface is more comprehensive to begin with which means far less work is
needed to get it looking and feeling like Firefox 3 (in my opinion, the high
water mark of web browser interfaces). Whatsmore, as it uses much of the same
underlying code as Firefox, many Firefox addons are also available for
SeaMonkey, or can be easily modified to work with SeaMonkey.

When closing Firefox, T.g.m. sometimes alters the current pagetab address

to this.

chrome://tabgroupsmanager/content/blank.html

Changes the address above, and as such, empties the tab for this fictious
address. Usually the tab can be restored by previous button in the next start.

It was in the old version, and in your new version. It was on Fire fox 14, 17
and 25. Especially often i happened to get it on 14 because was on it more. I
first didn't know maybe other units miscompatiblate with T-g-m, but now have an
almost clean Fire fox 25, just Session manager, Maff, nosquint, imagezoom,
imagerotate and that's about. But it does it. In 14 it did it almost as often
than once in 2 launches. Now rarely.

Yeah, and didn't ever install Chrome. First bet would be compability with
Session manager.

general inquiry: create new add-on?

General inquiry for open discussion:

Given the difficulty in finalizing legal issues pursuant to satisfying Axel
Shootingstar's original license and modification terms, would it make sense to
use his original code as a guide and simply create an entirely new add-on?

Enough time has passed (and changes introduced into Firefox) to perhaps make
this a worthwhile endeavor. Advantages:

1. We can work with best practices and technology from 2013 instead of
revamping an old codebase;
2. We can work together to create the new code rather than having to try to
learn how Axel did everything;
3. We can more easily specify new features and functionality without having to
figure out how to cobble it in;
4. Now that this site exists, it will be easier to rally people to an
open-source effort;
5. We will be able to immediately publish without worry of licensing issues.

Thoughts?

Analyse and Select a new license type for TabGroups Manager

The license can be found in the
[https://code.google.com/p/tabgroupsmanager/source/browse/trunk/license.txt
license.txt] file made by Alex Shootingstar. It is in Japanese and the online
translators doesnt help much to guess what type of license and rights we can
have to play and distribute the code.

We would need a perfect translation from someone who understand Japanish and
check if its possible to apply another open source license type like _MIT X11_,
Mozilla License, BSD..

Enhancements?

Guys,

Really appreciate you picking up this project and running with it. If I knew
how to code better, would offer to help.

Couple of quick Q's:

(1) Any way to sort one's hibernated tab groups? I have a few hundred or so...
just spent quite a while looking for "recipes" this nice Sunday before lunch.

(2) Any way to search one's tab groups
     (a) active, hibernated or both
     (b) By Tabs Group Name or by Page Name within all Tabs Groups
     (c) By content within pages of all active &/or hibernated tabs Groups

(3) This extension is a phenomenal feature for Firefox. But at times, am
concerned falling behind other browsers.

(4) Any work considered to make Tabs Group Manager a "standard"; by that I
mean ability to run on Safari &/or Chrome? Essentially, intent is so users who
invest multiple years into this means of remaining organized in their "web
life" are not left behind if other browsers become more dominant with other
features in the future.

(5) You guys could probably start a successful s/w company around the above
points !!! Feel free to contact me on all these points.

Very Best,

tab/tab group ordering completely lost on session load/restore (FF19/20+)

On recent Firefox releases (FF20+ and perhaps FF19), when a session restores,
the tabs and tab groups are re-ordered into an almost random order compared to
when the previous session was saved or ended. In previous versions of Firefox
the tabs and groups restored in the same order as when saved.

(It's unclear what the status of FF19 is. Some websites say it affects Firefox
20+, and Firefox 19 is ok, but I had to go back to FF18 to work around.)

Scrolling tabs with mouse scroll (via Tab Utilities extension) jumps between tab groups

I use mouse scroll while holding pointer over tab bar to switch between tabs.
This is done via the Tab Utilities (or Tab Utilities Phoenix) extension. When I
used original TabGroups Manager, it worked OK and tabs were scrolled
consistently. With the latest beta (addon-2013.07.07.002-fx.xpi) it jumps
between groups. I mean, when I'm in the first group with lots of tabs, I scroll
them with mouse scroll and it scrolls through the first three tabs, then
switches to another group and scrolls its tabs, then switches back to the first
groups and scrolls a few more tabs in it, then switches to the third group -
etc. With original TabGroups manager it scrolled the whole group consistently,
and after the end of the group it didn't switch to any other group but to the
first tab in the same group instead. Firefox 23.0.1.

Broken things in TGM 2011 (closed: now superseded)

Here's TGM issues I'm aware of (to add to the list if they aren't there
already):

1. (FF19/20+) suspended groups are lost on restart/restore.

2. (FF19/20+) tab/tab group ordering is lost on session load/restore.

3. "browser.sessionstore.restore_hidden_tabs" is not overridden to TRUE by the
extension, therefore tabs can permanently be "lost" or not saved when a session
restores.

4. Hibernated group count isn't updated when groups hibernate or unhibernate.

5. When using multiple tab handler, attempts to drag multiple tabs between
groups can be extremely unreliable or simply persist to fail, and the "move to
other group>" context menu doesn't always show if multiple tabs are selected
(which would allow it to be done without drag&drop)

Hope this helps!

Right click on a group invokes two context menus at once

I haven't found any documentation for this one, but we've all talked about it.
Let's open a case here. Maybe we can post another issue for interface testing
on select versions of Firefox.

"There is a bug with the dev version that needs to be fixed. When you have tab
groups at the bottom underneath the bookmarks bar and you right click on a
group to bring up the menu options for hibernate and all that, it pops up the
menu that's meant for right clicking on the group bar as well, so you get
overlapping menus. That needs to be fixed. There should be an option to change
the menus behavior based on left click, right click, middle click. You're going
to say there is, but there really isn't. The option is there, but it doesn't
allow you to change the right click behavior. There is no pull down menu. I'm
using 24 Beta 1, so maybe this is just a bug with it. Not sure. Please fix it
in next dev version. Thanks for keeping this alive!!"

NS_ERROR_XPC_JAVASCRIPT_ERROR_WITH_DETAILS - setTabValue

Bug 996053 is landed - make nsISessionStore's setTabValue, setWindowValue and

consistency with SessionStore.jsm

Result:
NS_ERROR_XPC_JAVASCRIPT_ERROR_WITH_DETAILS

method: [nsISessionStore::setTabValue]

Stack:

the lines can differ due various fixes in my tabgroupmanager.js, but its always
setTabValue() in relation to group id:

Solution:
convert the 3rd parameter with .toString()

Suggestion: Autopopulate group based on text search criteria

I just installed this addon and it looks wonderful for a tab hoarder such as
myself. I find my internet usage scattered and my number of tabs unmanageable.
One thing I would like is for functionality like autogroup (found here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/autogroup/?src=search ) but tied
to my tab groups. i.e. I could setup rules to automatically snap new tabs with
the word "rom" in the title to my gaming tab group, "droid" to the andoid
group, etc.

This would GREATLY increase functionality for myself.

Out of memory when saving session

I have hundreds of tabs in tens of groups. Usually this makes no problem. But
occasionaly, Firefox signals an out-of-memory error despite the fact that there
are still lots of free memory in the system. Once I start getting this error,
it doesn't solve itself and I have to restart (kill) the Firefox. The error
occurs (only?) on both automatic (timer, on exit) and manual session saves by
TGM.

The error reads:

http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/idm/v2r2/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.ibm.db2tools.f
peic.doc.ug%2Ffpeic282.html. These pages consume extreme amount of memory and
CPU, so there may be some other problems with them too. But this is just an
observation, it may not be correct.

versions of FF and TGM this was happening too (though I am not sure that the

Currently the error is occuring, but FF is still usable and works without any
other problem. FF takes 3.3GB RAM, the system has still 1GB of free physical

Dragging tabs to other (or new) group can be unreliable, and "move to other group" context menu isn't always shown

When using multiple tab handler, attempts to drag multiple tabs between groups
can be extremely unreliable or simply persist to fail (typically an attempt to
drag does nothing more than change the tab selection), and the "move to other
group>" context menu doesn't always show if multiple tabs are selected (which
would allow it to be done without drag&drop).

Tab groups lost on restart, can't restore from previous session

Before submitting the issue, please check that your version of TabGroups

Please provide any additional information below and screens capture if possible.

Up to now, I've always been able to get back the missing groups by doing a
manual restore of the previous session. Since I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 with
FF 29, this no longer works.

I had a situation a while back where I also had trouble getting back lost
groups from previous sessions, but was able to get them back somehow, but I
don't remember the details or the incantations I needed in order to do this.

At any rate, I've lost a ton of tabs and would like to get them back. I'm sure
they're out there somewhere, but I'm not sure how to get at them. If they're
truly lost, I do have a backup from a couple of weeks ago or so that I could
get them from, but I'm guessing they'll get lost again on the next restart.

I've bumped into this sort of problem every so often with TGM, but this is the
first time I haven't been able to find a workaround.
