Auto trigger Flubaroo whenever a submission comes in

Flubaroo is one fantastic script especially to teachers like me everywhere..
Could you possibly add a feature that whenever a student submits the form,
Flubaroo automatically triggers itself and send the result to the student. This
would be really wonderful.
Scenario : students stay up late and revises for exam.. Can't get immediate
feedback while teacher is unavailable.
Scenario 2: teacher on leave .

ability to manually assign points to short answer/essay questions after Flubaroo grades the rest.

with the rigor of common core, we need to add more higher level thinking
questions...open ended. I know that we can "skip grading" questions, but I was
wondering if there was a way to manually assign points to those questions after
Flubaroo has finished grading the rest of the test. Otherwise, we end up
e-mailing the kids the wrong grade for their test (Their grade w/o the higher
order thinking questions).

Duplicate student submissions into Grades sheet

When emailing out grades, the email currently includes a copy of the student's
own response. At the time of emailing, this is copied from the Student
Submissions sheet, based on a hidden column in Grades that contains the row
number of their submission.

This works, unless a teacher sorts or changes the Student Submissions sheet (or
even deletes it). Then the row number recorded in Grades becomes incorrect, and
can result in incorrect emails being sent out.

No rectify this, Grades needs to be fully self-contained by including the
student submissions further down the spreadsheet. This can actually be a
feature for some teachers, since it means that a record of the student's
submissions will always be around, even if the entries in the Student
Submissions sheet get deleted.

grading a range of numbers correct

After submitting the question below online, I got an email response asking me
to fill out this request:

I am new to Flubaroo and am excited about the possibilities. I attended a
GoogleSummit and asked my presenter if there was a way to grade a number, or
more specify, a range of numbers – he did not believe there was a way to do
this. For example, I teach math and generally don’t care if my students use
the pi button on their calculator or just 3.14 – but they produce slightly
just different numbers. It would be great if the correct answer was 5.168, but
it corrected 4.98-5.36 as correct answers. It would also be helpful if students
round incorrectly (if that is not the skill being assessed) or if they round to
different places. Any suggestions or is this something that Flubaroo may be
able to do soon?

Thanks,

Automated salutations and closings in individualized feedback

Within the individualized feedback, automatically create salutations and
closings so that the note to the student is more personalized. For example, the
feedback could read as:

Hi [Student's first name],

[Personalized feedback written by teacher]

Regards,
[Teacher's name]

Cannot see continue button in Step 2 when too many student idenfiers

A teacher had a large number of student identifiers (5), some of which were
quite long. It seems that this causes problems for the UI in Step 2, and as a
result the "Continue" button gets booted out of the viewable area.

As a quick fix, I'll just increase the width of the window from 700px to 800px.
That resolved it for this user, when debugging on the fly.

Individualized feedback

In addition to the teacher's note to an entire class, it would be great if
there was an option to provide feedback to individuals. Ideally, teachers would
be able to see a students answers and comments/suggestions in the spreadsheet,
then in an adjacent cell, write feedback to each student, and Flubaroo would
include this note with an automated "Hi (Student's first name), (teacher's
comments), Regards, (Teachers' name)."

Grading threshold

Hi!
Curently, individual students who scored below 70% will appear in red font. I
think it would be very handy if the teacher could determine the threshold
(percentage) when the test is successfully completed and when not. In my
opinion, this could be done in settings option for grading.

Individual Reports

Instead of relying on the students to enter the right email address to the
test, there should be a way for the teacher to print the reports and hand them
out to students.

Option to include explanation for each question in the student emails

To help students understand the reasoning behind different concepts, it would
be helpful if teachers had the option to include a short explanation associated
with each question in the email sent to students. As an additional feature, it
would be great if it were possible to include clickable links as part of these
explanations so that students could easily go to a website for descriptions,
images, and/or videos that would help clarify the tested concepts.

Can you reduce the size of the text when emailing score details and reduce the size of the boxes?

Hi Dave,

Thank you so much for creating this awesome tool to incorporate into Google
Docs. I will be using it quite often. I was just wondering if there is any way
to reduce the font size and/or the size of the red box when the email gets sent
which includes the questions the user got wrong. It looks awesome on my Iphone
but I need to email the grades to my staff. It is pretty daunting when you
have 10-20 questions. Just a suggestions. Thank you in advance.

Item Scoring Options Changes/Additions

In flubaroo the choices for assigning value to an item could be improved with a
few additions. It is tremendous to be able to "skip grading" on an item, but
it would be more useful to me if I could "Exclude" an item. Sometimes I get
items generated in my google spreadsheet that have been deleted from my form.
They still appear in the email report that goes out to parents if they have
been labeled with the "Skip Grading" option. If there was an "Exclude" option,
that would help many teachers clean up messes, and even keep other types of
information that they would collect on a form and not want desiminated via
email. A thought.

My second notice is the reason I emailed in the first place. It would be great
to include an "Extra Credit" option in the pull down menu for item scoring
value. Perhaps it would be necessary to include multiple "Extra Credit"
options (1 Extra Credit Point; 2 Extra Credit Points; etc.). I often include
questions on assessments that are scored as extra credit. It seems to me that
it wouldn't be difficult to include that as an option since it would only mean
that points earned on the item were included in the total point sum and not
included in the total point possible sum. I have basically written the
function myself in the "grades" worksheet, but it would be nice to skip that
step (especially since many teachers would not know how to write the function
themselves).

Google Analyitcs tracking of Flubaroo usage may be flawed

I'm not 100% convinced that my GA code is perfect. For example, when I only
ever track "first install" once, and see therefore that my number of page views
and unique page views for "/First Install" per day is always the same. This is
as it should be, since someone can't do a "first install" more than once.

But for grading, I see that my number of page views is almost always 2x my
number of unique page views. This is very consistent. This either means that
most users grade the 2x per day (perhaps usually regrading the same
assignment?), or that something is funky with my GA code and how it identifies
unique users. Attached is yesterday's data.

Calculate histogram on the fly

Right now the histogram URL is generated during the grading process. This means
changes to the grades made manually would not be reflected in it. Instead, the
histogram URL should be generated dynamically, each time the report is run,
from the data in the Grades sheet.

This will enable the "manually graded" questions feature.

New Pages for sections/ teachers

When the responses are graded, there should be an option to store the grades
into additional spreadsheets. For example, if I had 4 classes taking the test,
instead of one grade sheet I'd have 4; one for each class. This is very useful
when new sheets could also be generated for multiple teachers with multiple
classes using the same assignment.

Be able to only accept an answer once

We use flubaroo for testing and only allow students to submit the test one
time. Lucky for us, the students have not figured out yet that our grading
system (flubaroo) takes the second submission. I think this would help everyone
out a lot. Thanks for the software, besides this one issue, I think the program
is great.

Flubaroo should allow case-sensitive answers

Is there any way that Flubaroo COULD be case sensitive? For example, I would
like to use it for a spelling test, but we watch for capitalization. Is there
a way this could be an added feature or something to add to the answer key like
the %or for multiple answers?

Fractions handled improperly

For example 4/9 entered in a form (as a fraction) becomes 4/9/2012 in the
spreadsheet. When flubaroo reads the answers it marks it wrong, even when
graded against the answer key which was entered as 4/9 but now appears as
4/9/2012, which is the same as the students.

The approach to fixing this needs to be to undo the date formatting in the cell
(e.g. change it to String) before attempting to grade, if the cell is formatted
as a Date.

Small Font Size in email message to students

Flubaroo grading fractions incorrectly

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Create a form with answers that look like fractions (e.g. 4/5, or 4/5 - 3/8)
2. Grade it.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Flubaroo should mark answers correct if they match the answer key. But for some
reason Flubaroo sees these cells as dates (e.g. 4/5 = April 5, 2012). Further,
when comparing the dates, Flubaroo doesn't consider them to be equal. So in the
end these questions get marked wrong. You can work around by putting text
infront of the answers (e.g. "4/5" -> "a. 4/5").

I will need to investigate this further to figure out what a good fix is.

Please change sending grades per email

Please describe your feature request in detail, and explain how it would
work, and why it would be of help to you and other teachers.

I would like to use Flubaroo to grade assignments for students, as well as
provide them with the answers to questions they got correct/incorrect.

Yet according to the FERPA law, teachers across the country may not send actual
grades nor test scores to students per email.

I would be very grateful if you could make a change in the options to email
students , that teachers may not include the grade/score, simply just the
questions and answers.

Once this change is made, I believe this would be much more helpful for
teachers and students alike. It provides a wealth of information for teachers
to focus on data-based instruction.

Thanks again! I hope to see this change soon!

Range of acceptable numerical answers and search for specific text in short response answers

For short response questions that require a numerical answer, Flubaroo would
look for numbers within a specific range. For example, if the correct answer is
5.3, a teacher would be able to specify that any number between 5.2 and 5.4 is
acceptable. This would eliminate issues due to rounding and significant digits
(e.g., both 5.29 and 5.30 would be acceptable).

For text answers, Flubaroo would look for specific words rather than a perfect
match. For example, if the correct answer is "Velocity", then the automated
grader would accept "Velocity.", "It's velocity.", "Because of the velocity",
and so on.

Grading assignments with more than ~100 submissions leads to server error

The nondescript server error occurs when there are a large number of
submissions (> 100). The issue is that when "Grades" is created, it starts out
with the default 100 rows. So long as there are enough rows existing in Grades,
there is no problem. But when you try to insert some data in say, row 120,
you'll get an error.

To resolve, I will add the necessary number of rows to the Grades sheet upon
creation.

Option to send out email to student immediately upon submission

For formative assessment and immediate automated feedback purposes, the teacher
would have the option of telling Flubaroo to send out an automated email (with
the calculated score) upon submission of a quiz. As a further (less important)
option, the teacher would be able to tell Flubaroo to send out emails to
students at a specified time.

Original issue reported on code.google.com by [email protected] on 19 Jun 2013 at 10:15

Flubaroo should give option to only email grades for new submissions.

When the "Email Grades" option is selected, Flubaroo should give 2 options (as
a radio button selection):

  1. Send all students their grades (#)
  2. Only send grades to students who have not yet been emailed (#)

This is to meet the commonly described use-case of a quiz that is ongoing, such
that new submissions come in all the time. In this case, the teacher needs an
easy way to only email grades to new submissions, and not re-email grades to
students who they have already emailed in the past.

To accomplish this, Flubaroo needs to:
  * Keep a new column called "Already Emailed", which by default will have a value of "No" for a new submission when graded.
  * If option #2 is selected, then Flubaroo will look only for rows with the value "No" (actually, != "Yes"), and after emailing, will change this value to "Yes". Any values with "Yes" in the column already will be skipped.
  * If option #1 is selected, then the current value of this column for each grade will be ignored, and will be set to "Yes" after the email goes out.
  * When re-grading, Flubaroo will need to remember the Yes/No value of all grades in the Grades sheet, so that the same value can be re-applied when the "Grades" sheet is regenerated.
  * Additionally when re-grading, Flubaroo will need to remember the number of times a submission has been made from a given student. If that value increments, then any previous "Yes" value should be reset to "No", since this is a new grade.
  * If this is the first time grades are being sent (all rows have "No" for this column), then no option should appear in the UI, and implicitly option #1 will be picked.

Inclusion of HTML/JS tag in question "<script>" causes failure in Flubaroo email

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Inclusion of HTML/JS tags in a "Student Submission" question or response
will cause email task to abruptly end.
2. Removing tags altogether or changing the <script> to &lt;script&gt; will
allow the email to send completely.
3.

Including HTML/JS tags into the Student Submissions question will abruptly stop
the content from being included in the email transmission.

Use in-spreadsheet formulas to calculate percentages and total points

Rather than calculating total score during grading, instead just insert
formulas into the spreadsheet for this. This will allow me to build the

Change the way text is handled for grid type questions.

When setting the point value (step 1) and on the grades sheet the text is
limited to the first X characters. If the question part of the grid is long
enough you never see the row portion to correctly know the full question being
asked.

I see two options and maybe a combination of both is needed.

One is to expand the string length.

Two is to take the first X(20) characters of the question concatenated with the
row text.

Thanks!

Summary of all selected MCQ answers to detect common misconceptions

It would be extremely helpful if Flubaroo had the ability to tally all the
students' selected answers for multiple choice questions. This would allow
teachers to easily see what the common misconceptions are. For example, say the
following question is posed:

Why is the weather hotter in summer than winter?
a. Because the earth is closer to the sun.
b. Because the earth is tilted on an axis.
c. Because the earth rotates.

It would be helpful to easily see how many students are selecting each of the
three options rather than just how many students answered correctly.

Create support for non-English languages

I have gotten offers to translate all the text in Flubaroo to other languages.
But rather than publish more than one version of Flubaroo, I'd like to add
multi-language support to the single script. To do this:

1. Research if it's possible to detect the browser's language. If not, file a
bug with the GAS team.

2. Once language determined (maybe via menu option, if #1 doesn't pan out), set
all strings accordingly. I think it's fine to have a few languages hard-coded
in the script, since there isn't that much text.

3. If I end up supporting more than just a few languages, then I'll need to
store all the strings online somewhere (flubaroo.appengine.com), and suck them
down in realtime with a getUrl() call.

Make links live and include images in emails

It would be helpful if in the emails to the students, there was a live link
back to the quiz. This would allow them to see the original questions as well
as the provided options.

It would be even more helpful if any images that were used in the quizzes were
also included in the emails. When students don't have an image to reference, it
often makes the answer in their email meaningless. For instance: "Which path
does the package follow when it is dropped from the plane?" A student may click
on "Path A" when the correct answer is "Path C." Since the image is not
provided in their results, the student does not have a point of reference.

Lastly, I would like to provide live links in the Help Tips so that students
can simply click on a link that will take them to a site with further
explanation.
