You may want to have a look on my attempt for LSP integration jupyterlab/jupyterlab#2163 (comment) and help to develop & test it. Direct link: https://github.com/krassowski/jupyterlab-lsp

This repo is created to prove the idea. As you might see in readme.md
The current state of this extension is merely a 'proof-of-concept' implementation and nowhere near production status. All functionality and interaction with the 'abstract editor interface' that JupyterLab provides is still missing.
And the project is done. I guess.

Haha came here to ask the same question, seems you read my mind.
It would be nice to be able to do everything in JupyterLab rather than having to switch programs. The Vim and Emacs key-bindings are very nice starts however.
My impression was that this was the best project for bringing VS-Code style code-completion (rather than REPL-style) to the JupyterLab text editors, so it would be disappointing if this project was abandoned and/or similar work isn't being done in JupyterLab master.

@krassowski That looks amazing, thank you so much for your hard work on this!
I'll have to look into what exactly LSP/Monaco/CodeMirror/etc. technologies are before being able to contribute, but if I can figure any of it out I'd love to help, having JupyterLab as a sufficiently featureful one-stop shop would really simplify things and make my life a lot easier.
