What is LZO ?

LZO is a portable lossless data compression library written in ANSI C. It offers pretty fast compression and very fast decompression. Decompression requires no memory.

In addition there are slower compression levels achieving a quite competitive compression ratio while still decompressing at this very high speed.

What is Python-LZO ?

Python-LZO provides Python bindings for LZO, i.e. you can access the LZO library from your Python scripts thereby compressing ordinary Python strings.

Installation

Ubuntu/Debian Linux

You need the following dependencies installed:

  • zlib1g-dev
  • liblzo2-dev
  • python-pip or python3-pip

Then, just pip install python-lzo.

CentOS/Red Hat Enterprise Linux

You need the following dependencies installed:

  • yum install epel-release
  • yum install python-pip
  • yum install lzo-devel
  • yum install lzo-minilzo

Then, just pip install python-lzo.

macOS

You need XCode installed, or something else that provides suitable C compiler. Then just:

pip install python-lzo

Windows

There is an issue filed to provide a pre-compiled wheel to greatly simplify this.

Until then, here we go:

Where's the documentation ?

Python-LZO comes with built-in documentation which is accessible using lzo.__doc__ and lzo.func__doc__. See "Chapter 3: Data Model" in the Python Reference Manual for more information.

Additionally you should read the docs and study the example programs that ship with the LZO library.

Python 2 support statement

After Python 2.7 hits end of life on January 1, 2020, a Python 2.7 support branch will be made and Python 2.7 will eventually be dropped from master.

Until then, Python 2.6 support will probably also remain as long as it continues to be no more burden than 2.7 itself already is.

Notes

The Windows version is tested.

It is not currently continuously tested on OSX, but that is coming.
