Anyways, saw an incoming link from your website (http://www.idlehamster.com/entry/installing_laravel_4_on_dreamhost) to my website (http://www.geekality.net/2013/02/01/dreamhost-composer/) and read your blog post. Got curious about your statement that "The install directory couldn’t be found". Was that perhaps simply because you had no bin directory in your home directory already? The command worked fine for me, but then I did already have that bin directory there.
