I use codespaces and cloud IDEs for my projects. To create a virtualenv in GitHub codespaces, in the terminal, use virtualenv ~/.venv. Modify the bashrc file so that it'll start the venv automatically. If you're familiar with SageMaker, this is similar to lifecycle configurations. You can achieve this in codespaces by:

  1. vim ~/.bashrc
  2. G or Shift+G to the bottom
  3. Start editing by hitting a
  4. Source it source ~/.venv/bin/activate
  5. Hit Esc
  6. :wq and Enter to exit Vim, which means "write and quit"
