jamesbateson.co.uk's Issues

fix: colour intensity toggle

Now I'm using my brand yellow quite prominently, I'm a little concered that it could cause cognitive accessibility issues due to it's 'warning' connotations.

Look at adding a 'calm' colour toggle like the one here: https://www.autism.org.uk/

feat: add talks to homepage

I've now been lucky enough to give a few small public talks. It might be nice to feature these on my homepage. Could just have images and then maybe link to videos if I have them.

refactor: UI refresh

I think it's about time for a bit of a redesign of this site. A chance to do a few things:

  • Put into practice some of skills I've developed during my first year at Code
  • Refresh the design of the site a little (been over a year now I think)
  • Explore some of the advancements Netlify have made since I last updated the site
  • Chance to practice some design skills thinking about accessibility (usability) and inclusivity
  • Look at changing my stack up
  • Take a look through the backlog of issues and action any that are still relevant

FOUT

Investigate quite a noticeable FOUT

style: post update tidy up

Added some bodge hotfixes but still not perfect. In particular check light/dark mode and code samples.

build: duplicate font files loaded

Using the Netlify Subfont plugin has greatly reduced the size of the font files, and added a nicer font loading strategy. However, for some reason all the fonts are loaded twice, meaning quite a few more requests than are needed.

feat: add some Strava data?

As I'm not back running more often and using Strava, I'd like to bring some of that data to my site. I was thinking the following:

  • Lastest run details
  • Total distance for week/year
  • Total time for the year
  • Total elevation for the year

fix: investigate about image loading

This seems to take a few seconds to load in at time.

No big issue, but there are some newer asset prioritisation techniques since I last looking at this, so could maybe be improved a touch.

feat: article ideas

  • HTML email modules
  • Accessibility statements
  • Learnings from an accessibility audit
  • AAA conference
  • Accessibile tab pattern learnings
  • Doing some speaking
  • Life/goal updates

fix: post note headings

Some are using headings, some just a strong element (not semantic). I need to normalise this.

Kind of related to #480

feat: article/journal useful links section

Would be nice to have a little useful links summary section at the bottom of relevant article/journey items. Could add these in the CMS and then just not render the section if none added.

feat: add external articles list

I've written a few article for the Code blog and one for the HTMHell advent calendar. Would be nice to have these featured on my homepage.

feat: explore headless CMS options

My Nelify CMs workflow is great and works well for me. However, it can be quite slow and I've also recently been made aware that it's quite inaccessible (my bad for not testing/realising this). So maybe it's time to look at an alternative.

chore: project structure

Having recently added a small Today writeup, it's become clear that these pages need a more generic structure and purpose. Started to feel confused between tutorial and showcasing. These pages should be more about showing the project off, screenshots, etc.

refactor: add a font loading strategy

I was originally using a Netlify build plugin for this, however, it now seems to be causing build errors. So digging into a manual approach would be nice.

style: nicer fallback fonts

On my Mac (Firefox Nightly) there seems to be an issue with the Service Worker loading the fonts when they are on the Netlify servers. The fallback fonts (mainly the serif headings) don't look great, so add something like Georgia as a fallback for headings.
