SvelteStorm

A Svelte IDE like no other. Embrace the storm. SvelteStorm is a new and improved open-source integrated developer environment (IDE). SvelteStorm is specifically tailored to provide all of the essential tools a Svelte developer needs to build a Svelte application. The IDE contains a code editor, a terminal environment, a file directory, a browser view, developer tools, and a component state viewer. SvelteStorm was built using Svelte and Electron and is downloadable for Windows and Mac operating systems. With the new and improved SvelteStorm, developers can now observe state changes in their applications using the Time Travel Debugger tool. From its modernized and clean UI, to its quick loading time and component state window, SvelteStorm is a rising star for the Svelte community.

How To Use SvelteStorm

  1. Click on the 'File' menu button in the top-left corner, then open a file or folder to begin editing. (You can also use CTRL+F to open a folder with a shortcut)
  2. When a Svelte project is opened, you will notice the File Directory populates showing all files in the directory. From here you can open, edit, and save files.
  3. To use the browser window, simply run any command to start your project and a new browser window will open to the localhost port your project is running on.
  4. To use the Time Travel Debugging feature, run the command npm run sdebug and a browser window will open with your project. Additionally, the Time Travel Debugging window will generate an initial snapshot of your project and a d3.js component hierarchy tree of your application. Any action on the browser window that creates a state change in your application will generate a new snapshot and update the d3.js tree. To view previous snapshots, click on the Snapshot button of your choice and you will see cards for each component that contain the component’s state at the time of the snapshot. As you navigate between Snapshots, you will notice your application state changes are reflected on your browser window. This will allow you to see how your applications state changes based on different events, happy debugging!
  5. Developer Tools are accessible via the 'Help' button in the top menu, or by using CTRL+D

Installing SvelteStorm 4 for the Purpose of Enhancing SvelteStorm as an IDE

macOS

  1. If using Node Version Manager (nvm) enter the following commands to help ensure a smooth installation: Install node version 16.16.0
    • nvm install 16.16.0
    • nvm use 16.16.0
    • nvm alias default 16.16.0
  2. Clone this SvelteStorm 4.0 repo to your code editor of choice (VS Code works best)
  3. Run npm install to install dependencies
  4. Run npm start and SvelteStorm will open up and be ready for use!

Windows (DO NOT USE WSL)

Do Not attempt to use anything related to WSL!!

  1. Install all of the latest Windows Updates (including the optional ones)
  2. Install the latest PowerShell (version 7.2.5 as of this writing)
  3. Install Microsoft Visual Studio
  • Note: This IS NOT Visual Studio Code … Just plain Visual Studio
  • As of this writing 17.2.6
  • Link to Visual Studio
  • When prompted for modules to include, select the following:
    • Python development
    • Node.js development
    • Desktop development with C++
  1. Install Node Version Manager (nvm) for Windows
  1. Clone this repo to your code editor of choice (VS Code works best)
  2. Run npm install to install dependencies
  3. Run npm start and SvelteStorm will open up and be ready for use!
  4. Install the latest version of git
  5. Now Install Video Studio Code
  1. Install the following VS Code Extensions:
    1. Remote Development
      • Remote WSL
      • Remote SSH
      • Remote Containers
    2. CMake Tools
    3. C/C++ Extension Pack
  2. Clone this SvelteStorm 4.0 repo to your code editor of choice (VS Code works best)
  3. Run npm install to install dependencies
  4. Run npm start and SvelteStorm will open up and be ready for use!
