Changelog
You can find the complete changelog here, but also in the about section of the app.
If the user uses some unexpected separators to mention more users, for example "\" or "/", the links to the profiles are considered one single link, which doesn't work.
As it stands now, scrollbars begin at the top of the windows, right under the title bar, and end at the window's bottom. This results in getting hidden by other UI elements.
Scrollbars should begin with their relevant elements that should be scrolled and end with them.
In the following images, the overlapped part has been coloured in orange and the visible part in yellow.
Some rants contain images. devRant lowers the resolution on the website feed by default but the resolution doesn't change. On the app, the images remain small. It should be nice and more readable if images scaled to their actual dimensions. (images attached with the app and web feed handling)
Glow effect showing very harshly on Lumia 950. For example, on the 'To top of page' navigation arrow, there is just a solid circle of light around the button which doesn't soften over distance. I cannot screenshot the issue, but may be an issue with AMOLED displays.
A nice feature would be to minimize the app to a trayicon so you could always have live notifications, without having it open all the time or minimized.
The sorting algorithm consists of 3 radio buttons. To change them, you have to click exactly on it. If you push on the button's label, nothing happens. This is not a problem for big screens like computers, but on smaller screens like phones, it makes it easier to click on them.
On the desktop version of the app, clicking on rant tag in rant feed (left plane) will only work if the right plane is closed (empty). Once the right plane is filled with any content, tags in the rant feed stop working.
Clicking on tags in the right plane works just fine.
App version 2.0.0-beta05
OS W10pro 1703 build 15063.674
It would be amazing to have some sort of scaling or font option since currently most of the text feels too small, especially the notification icons text:
When the app is launched on desktop and when no rant is selected, the right plane looks... blank!
Maybe a small message like "Click on a rant to view comments" and a devrant logo will look good.
Sometimes when we are subscribed to an active rant we want to check whether there are new comments on it. Currently, the only ways that's possible to do that is by being on the most recent rant and drag downwards for reload or do the same thing on top of a rant. However, this way you lose track of the rant and/or of the comment, especially if there are many rants and comments (and not being subscribed of course). By adding a chronological sort "Oldest to Most Recent" and "Most Recent to Oldest", you facilitate the reloading and viewing processes.
Alternatively, you can just add a reload button on main view and rant view.
Make 'Saved Rants' section with only the selected rants. The current feature Viewed section shows all the rants which are already seen. But Saved rants section shows only the saved rants
So this problem can be solved by just deactivating fluent design in the options, but it's still a bug, if one deactivates transparency in windows, keeps the fluent design option in the client turned on, has a white windows theme and then goes focuses the app - the icons turn invisible, because they are white on white.
If a rant has a picture attached, the area around, when clicked, should also open the rant.
Right now user has to click the area around just the text to open the rant, which works fine with rant without images but feels rather incomplete such a scenario.
Still an amazing app tho!
The sidebar is only shown on the Main view of the app. Going to another view hides it and the options to go back are either a Close button (Swag, Supporters, Settings, Feedback, About) or a Back button (all the rest). The problem is if people juggle too many times from notifs to rants, it requires too many times to click the Back button to go to the Main view.
Sometimes when I click a rant nothing happens even though I wait for a few seconds.
The previous rant does not disappear from the detailed view. Other times, it will show up after a few seconds.
My suggestion: review the process of opening a new rant (sometimes previous ones do not disappear, which is weird) and show a progress bar to inform the user something is happening.
Cheers!
If you are deep down a rant with its comments, there is no refresh function, maybe add one in the top next to the share icon and or allow F5 to refresh the content? also maybe scroll to the exact same position after refreshing, so it wouldn't reset to the very top either.
The main panel title bar (bar with notifications/rant sort and filter) already has acrylic material. News/weekly box, rant filter panel and user title panel should have it too
This is just aesthetics feature for future consideration.
I have a bigger monitor connected to my laptop, and here's how it shows on both of them in fullscreen:
Laptop
Monitor
On laptop screen it looks perfect, but on monitor the rant feed (left panel) is just too narrow and kinda painful to read compared to the opened rant (right panel).
Ability to switch between two predefined widths of panels, or active resizing via mouse would be great.
Keep up the good work! :)
With the new notifications coming to v2.0, it would be nice to take advantage of the Live Tiles.
It could either be just a badge number for the new notifs or
It could show the notif message (++ rant/comment, mention, new comments, new rants) and the corresponding icon, in a similar way of how messaging apps work.
On v1 we were able to customize the theme to a very high extent. However it had too many options that it was making it tedious. New Theme Customization options could be Simple (just Colour with a colour picker and Font including font size and effects) and Advanced (the old customization panel).
On desktop, the app may look better if you use an acrylic brush behind the rant previews like it suggests on MSDN. It should add better sense of depth and structure.
This occured when I refreshed a rant via pull-to-refresh and there was no internet connection problems nor was devrant down also the icon has a small line that makes the circle appear less smooth on the inside:
