How feasible is using webkit?

There will be some very serious advantages to using webkit as the rendering engine over tkinter. We did some initial investigation and decided it was too difficult to do during the initial sprint, but it might be possible to get it set up. This could mean taking over a dead project though (the python-webkit GNU project), which has pros and cons (the heavy license is annoying definitely).

Regardless, I want to investigate this more and if we do decide to not use webkit I want compelling reasoning that outweighs these pros:

  • Getting people to write plugins using Python and HTML will be extremely easy.
  • Development outside of the initial renderer set up will be very rapid, we'll have lots of flexibility, and the UI development will transform from being super shitty to being super awesome.
  • Using webkit makes us seem cool and trendy and interesting, where tkinter will immediately make people scowl (this is mostly a marketing thing, but also has merit due to tkinter's lack of awesome projects built with it).

Something that might be good to look at is GitHub's Atom browser that uses webkit. I don't know anything about how the built that so it might be that they it's all Python and we can just nom nom it up.
