map's Issues

reconsider the grid

How many people actually print out maps and use the New Israel Grid anymore?
IMO just another cluttering element.

Labels overlap

Prevent labels from overlapping
Very apparent in lower zooms.

Avoid overiding the user's preferred OSM editor

Avoid overiding the user's preferred OSM editor by removing "?editor=id" from the URL created by the "Edit this map using OSM" button.

By the way, iD is anyway the default editor unless the user has explicitly chosen a different editor in the profile.

Garmin instructions

Can you please add instructions for routable Garmin map?
There are instructions for and automatic tools for general OSM maps.
They need some adaptions to generate maps from the hiking map.
Thanks
Moshe

Accessiblity to tourists

I'm not sure how relevant the feature is, but currently this map is not accessible to tourists.
making English tiles or English labels tiles would help in this direction.

Clutter

Please reconsider removing the clutter from lower zooms. Especially in densely mapped areas like the Jerusalem corridor it just looks bad and obstructs useful map info..
You can restrict spring names to higher zooms.

Explore parallel tile generation options

Currently, the tile generation process takes more than 24 hours.
Internally, it is separated into 4 phases:

  1. Israel Hiking tiles for zoom levels 7-15
  2. Trails overlay tiles
  3. Israel Hiking tiles for zoom level 16
  4. MTB Israel tiles

According to This Maperitive discussion, multiple Maperitive installations can be used to run multiple instances in parallel.

Add wget.exe to the installation instructions

Hi,
I tried to run the script and got an error

>use-ruleset` alias=default

MTB relations

Would be very useful to add those. Much like OCM does.

Recover tiles after crash

When Maperitive crashes or aborted during tile generation, there could be newly generated tiles that were not uploaded and potentially will not be re-generated. There could also be tile zip files that were not completely uploaded.

Before generating tiles, and before potentially downloading new OSM data, the build script should resume uncompleted tile zip file uploads and scan for new tiles without a zip file. Scanning for tiles should be based on the list of already created tile zip files.

Fragmented forest names

Forest and nature reserve names should not be fragmented if these relations contain several areas. If this can't be solved I would lose forest names altogether. These are official KKL names based on nearest settlement names and nobody uses them in real life anyway.

Footway that can be used by bikes should be rendered like paths?

So, we have routing but it looks weird now since the bike routing can go through footway (.....) if it doesn't have a bicycle=no tag (which is possible according to OSM footway wiki).
Should we render footway (......) only for highway=footway AND bicycle=no?

cycling specific features

There are several tags that are important to MTBikers which are missing fro the map.
Especially important to tourists planning a bikepacking or touring trip of Israel.
Those are bike shops, water points, food shops and restaurants, gas stations and hotels.
The opencyclemap is a popular map to consult regarding these.

Uneven tile update

Checkered appearance of fields indicate that not all tiles are updated at once.

Meadow rendering

Meadows in Israel look more like scrub than like farmland. The current texture might be misleading.

Place the LastModifiedDate.js file in Tiles folder

In order to prevent copying of files from one location to the other the js file should be created in the same directory as the tiles. The site will use that directory the same way it uses the tiles.

IsraelHiking.xml

File is not under the downloaded master file.
I downloaded it from here
I followed the path change instructions and created a copy under \mapsources. I can't see "Israel Hiking" on MOBAC.
[MOBAC 2.0.0 beta 1, build 2289]

Quarries are hard to see.

These are areas you want to avoid. Currently very subtle light grey.
I like the way Thunderforest Outdoors renders them.
